Hi all. After having taken rivaroxaban for the last 3 years now, due to bilateral PE's, I have recently found out that I shouldn't be having grapefruit or grapefruit juice. There is no mention of this on the information leaflet that comes with the tablets, so I googled it and lo and behold, a study has been recently conducted and people taking rivaroxaban (amongst other drugs) shouldn't have grapefruit. Has anyone else heard this?

I had heard that it was inadvisable to take grapefruit with rivaroxaban, but, as you say, it's not mentioned on the leaflet. I checked with my consultant, who agreed that it was not on the UK list of recommendations, but he then Googled and found that it was on the US list. In practice, you shouldn't take grapefruit with most types of medication, as it potentiates it, and can make it work better than expected, which is not always a good thing, especially in the case of blood thinners! So better safe than sorry!

I just assumed that you shouldn't eat grapefruit when I started taking the rivaroxaban tablets same as with lots of other prescription tablets.

I had bilateral pe back in 2017 myself.

Yes, read about that on the internet.

Surely if it's so well known that it reacts with the medication, there should be something in the literature that accompanies the tablets to warn people. As I said previously, I've been taking rivaroxaban for 3 years now and only heard about it by chance!!

I think they do more testing in the U.S. due to litigation so are more wary. I didn’t risk it as, a previous correspondent said, grapefruit isn’t recommended on a variety of medications.
