Hamstring & glut muscle pain

Hello, just recently I’ve had unbearable muscle pain in both upper legs which feel tight and often like lead——I was in the passenger seat this weekend and every time my husband would turn—my body would move slightly to the right and left and it was really painful—as in I actually yelled out. I’ve also been having a harder time getting up from my chair due to harsh pain when I tried to rise. I have RA and osteoporosis in my hips. The last doctor I saw suggested Reclast but used the more formal name, despite me asking what the common name is—she wouldn’t say so I couldn’t ask follow ups and then decided I want to find someone who treats me with respect and is willing to treat me as a team player. Therefore I can’t go ask my doctor —anyone else ever had this and what did you do? I’m trying to find a communicative RA and osteoporosis doc—but so far no luck. Thanks.

Sorry to hear you are not finding the help you are looking for. Check with your insurance provider for physicians in your network, than ask friends for recommendations. RA can be very pain and when movement hurts, we move even less. This unfortunately will start a bit of a downward spiral. If you have become less active and are sitting more, than your “hip” may be painful from stiffness in the muscles around the joints as well as joints. Stiffness will quite often lead to weakness, making it more difficult to stand up from chairs or turning in bed. This also can put you at risk of falling.

When you find a physician you can work with, ask for a referral to Physical Therapy. A physical therapist will teach you strengthens exercises that will improve your mobility, balance and frame of mind.

Hope this helps!

Thanks Melissa, I appreciate you taking time to offer ideas.—In the beginning,

I didn’t even know that it’s important to ask for a referral to PT and unfortunately I didn’t have doctors that thought of this either. Most rely on the drugs and tend to see that as the end all, be all. Strangely I find our local sports medicine clinic on a college campus to be the most responsive—so I called someone I’d seen there. ( even tho it’s primarily for athletes). I got some advice and was told to call them back this Friday if no improvement. I had started an elliptical floor pedal device and had mentioned I was only about 2-3 weeks into it—they suggested I lay off this for now and since I don’t drink much water, asked me to up my intake. I felt some confidence as they asked a series of questions—something I don’t seem to get elsewhere. I should have sought out a PT for how to use the pedals as RA is such a different condition. I’ll try to follow up and get a referral. Thanks!

Oh, I am so happy you got some answers and direction. We are all athletes and warriors! ...just different types!

Keep us posted on your progress!

Sorry to hear about that type of pain. Maybe doing some Hatha Yoga will, help. That is the type of yoga that stretches your glutes and hamstrings. Keeping them stretched always helps I think.

Is it possible that this is nerve pain rather than muscle pain? It sounds very similar to sciatica to me, though I'm sure there are other possible causes. Just another option for consideration and definitely worth getting it checked out - a good physiotherapist may be able to diagnose and treat.

Thanks met00, Christy81256,& Melissa, I had my sports clinic visit and got put on 20 extra prednisone in addition to my regular 5 for 5 days and then was asked to stop Celebrex for 5 days. I called in today as my pain wasn’t going away after two days and he called back! I missed it but he wrote a note asking questions about numb-ness anywhere, spine pain, or inability to stop urination—I didn’t have these so I’ll see him in a week. I will ask about nerve pain and I have a referral for PT, which reminds me to call as I haven’t received it. I used to do yoga but am wheel chair bound and can’t do yoga, unfortunately. Sitting is the pits. I did get a tick bite 20 years ago and my RA went downhill rapidly as I chased Lyme treatments-now chasing RA and Osteo treatments—but no doctor offers an integrative approach—yet. Thanks.
