A new me?

I am really struggling to come to terms with massive hair loss as a result of essential medication. I have ordered a wig but don't know how to cope until it arrives. Help!

Any advice would be really appreciated.

Hi Malheureus , i'm sorry to hear you're having such a difficult time. Firstly you've taken a great first step in reaching out to others, we often hear that talking to others who 'just get it' can make the world of difference.

Have you spoken to your GP about how your feeling? Or asked if there are any talking therapies you could be referred to? You can equally refer yourself if this is something you would prefer.

Another point of call would be to contact the charity Changing Faces as they specialise in visible differences and the impact of them, they offer sessions with a practitioner and offer skype sessions if needed.

Additionally at Alopecia UK we facilitate peer support. One of the methods of us doing this is our Facebook Closed Groups. The group is very active and a great place to read, chat, share and support others. You may find you get a lot quicker and more responses on there from some of your peers in there.

Main Facebook Group: facebook.com/groups/Alopeci...

I hope this has been of some help but if there is any other information or help I can provide please do get back in touch.

Hi Naomi

Thank you so much for your sensitive reply. It has helped just to read your words. I have now visited a wig specialist who has also been a great help. Together, we have chosen a wig that matches my own hair as closely as possible.

It can never replace my own but, at least, I have a back up in case I lose all my hair, I am not young enough or brave enough to embrace a bald head and will need a substitute if I am to lead anything like a normal life.

I would love to talk to others who have or are experiencing a similar situation to me.

But thanks again for reading my post and responding.

Hi i am using a beret when chilly as they are on trend as they say. I also wear a bandana scarf if it's a warmer day. Have a look online there are some pretty scarves and chemo hats are good too.

I have a wig too and I don't wear every day but I am now addicted to them and hope to get another different one in length and colour.

Best wishes

Hoggy

Thank you Hobby. I am hoping that in time my wig will be my new best friend. Anything has to be better than waking up each morning, dreading what I will find on my pillow and fearing even more pulling a comb through what is left of my hair.

I am quite paranoid but know this is irrational because the medication is essential and not taking it is not an option even though there are times when I am tempted to throw the lot down the loo!

Funnily enough my daughter has also suggested experimenting with headgear so I might look into this as well.

Thanks again
