Setraline: Hello I'v lost 60% of my hair since... - Alopecia UK
Setraline
I take Sertaline and although hair loss is mentioned in the leaflet its not the cause of my hair loss. I have Frontal Fibrosing Alopecea.

I am 72 years old and have Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia, but do not take any medication. I was told it is an autoimmune disease. I bought a wig, which I love. Seeing the consultant dermatologist again in two weeks, but as I understand it there is no cure.
Hi Stellenbosch
I'm 73 and I also have frontal fibrosing alopecia. I was catching up on posts - I've been very busy lately hence late reply. I found your post very encouraging as you say that you've bought a wig and love it. I have been in such a dilemma because my alopecia has progressed quite a bit - I have often wondered about getting a wig but I just don't know where to start. Did you find a supplier and get fitted for the one you purchased? I'm not sure if a wig would be comfortable to wear because of my existing hair. I don't think that I could bear to have it shaved or cut very short. I'd be very grateful if you could advise me on how you overcame these problems and what sort of wig you chose. I hope you can help me. Best wishes.
Hello gardner646
I looked online and found a shop which I then visited. They were wonderful, I ordered a wig and picked it up a week later. I have quite a lot of hair still but I was shown how to put on the wig cap ( nylon or better still cotton) to cover it, then the wig. It is exactly the colour of my own hair, well, my front hair, my own at the back is darker. No one has noticed it is a wig, and even when I told friends they were amazed. One even asked, when we met after she knew and had already seen it, why I wasn't wearing it and was staggered when I said I was! It is very similar to the style I have had for years. My own hair is thinner, I have lost about an inch all round the front, from ear to ear, which was hidden in the style I had, and no- one knew till I lifted my hair and showed them. One drawback to the wig is that when I take it off my own hair is really flat to my head, but I am trying different wig caps underneath. My hairdresser wanted me to have it cut really short but I refused.
My consultant took a skin biopsy to confirm his diagnosis and I have been told I could have very strong steroids to halt the disease, although hair already lost will not regrow. I am not sure I want to do that, as the side effects could be difficult. I will see him again next month. He is lovely, and keeps telling me how very rare this is, but I suspect lots of women don't go to the doctor about it, thinking losing hair is just part of old age
Some people are very upset about losing hair but I take the view that it's only hair, and nothing worse. One glorious advantage of the wig is that it only needs washing once a fortnight, and then given a quick shake, and left on its stand to dry at room temperature. As new, curls or whatever intact. No effort at all.
If you have any questions do let me know. Oh, I should say I paid for the wig, but didn't have to pay VAT. It isn't real hair but is the next best.
Do go to a proper wig shop and try some on! I found the shop near me online, and it's opposite a hospital, so I expect chemo patients use it too.
Best wishes
