Hi

Has anyone got any experience with lens replacements for cataracts? Any reactions to the lens?

Thanks

Sorry this is so long but it is not a short story! Peg led me down the path to another Autoimmune Disease called Adult a onset Stills Disease. Until my cataract surgery I did not know what was making me sick. Every single eye drop they give you for cataract surgery, antibiotic drops, steroid, etc. contain Peg. There were approximately 4 different drops 4 times a day. I ended up with a retina cyst too after surgery. After all the drops, I also could not hear because of the fluid behind my ear drums. My ENT wanted to puncture my ear drums. I was hesitant and wanted to wait a couple more weeks.

Luckily, my daughter came to visit me and said mom, I have a problem with latex and polyester and you should get rid of that fuzzy polyester blanket off your bed. The next day I replaced the polyester sheets, blankets and I could hear the following next day. Every day after the removal of polyester in the bed my hearing improved. I had no need to return to my ENT! After that I started to read about PEG/PG /polyester/polysorbate/polyurethane which led me to “Allergic to Glycols”. Needless to say, my bedroom is cotton everything. My husband had to get rid of his “My Pillow” which made me congested. The Pillow is chopped up Polyurethane! No “hypoallergenic” pillows stuffed with petroleum products for me. The bed cover, pillows everything has cotton inside. Between the eye drops and my bed my health was going down hill. When I stopped the drops and ditched polyester everywhere my life improved.

I still need to have the cataract removed from the other eye. However, my eye doctor said I would have to go to a speciality eye clinic. I certainly appreciate his honesty. Even the saline eye drops over the counter has PEG. Since I stopped using all drops, I really don’t have dry eyes any longer. I have had to use steroid eyes drops because of the retina problems. I have the drops compounded at a specialty pharmacy and it is slowly getting better.

I would probably have the other cataract removed if I can find an Eye Clinic that can accommodate PEG allergy. I have learned the hard way most all medications/injectables/biological/vaccines have a form of PEG/PG/Polysorbate.

Thanks for sharing all that info ! I appreciate it. I'm struggling to get steroid eye drops without PEG/polysorbate in them - the compounding chemist is looking into it for me. The lens itself hasn't caused any problems for you ?
