Antihistamines

Good Morning,General query in regards to taking antihistamines and effects on AF.

I have not had the need to take antihistamines for a while. A neighbouring Jasmine tree is in full bloom and causing me grief.

Doors and windows closed but still very strong scent plus it gets a wee bit hot all closed up. (In Brisbane, Oz)

I have Dr Googled but would like to get the informed opinion of fellow A-Fibbers prior to tackling itchy eyes, stuffy nose and not so flash breathing.

Not sure if chainsaw from Bunnings would go down well 🤔😉

Cheers Cam

Ceterizine always works for me. While the normal dose is 10mg a day, I was prescribed up to 40mg a day for urticaria, caused by Bisoprolol.

My husband has been on Ceterizine 40mgs for 6months for Urticaria. He is also on Bisoprolol but no one has suggested that this could be the cause. How did you know that it was caused by Bisoprolol?

Thomas45 profile image
Thomas45 in reply toLaurenNat1

It is a known rare side effect of Bisoprolol. A GP at my local medical centre who specialises in dermatology, said that Bisoprolol was the cause. I had only taken Bisoprolol for 7 weeks, before urticaria started, and had not had any other changes in lifestyle, diet, or medication. As I was being weaned off Bisoprolol I also had a sudden exacerbation of asthma, requiring ambulance admission to hospital, thankfully for only three days. I was subsequently barred from taking all other beta blockers in the future.

Thank you for your reply. My husband had been on Bisoprolol for at 2 years before his rash and itching started so it cannot be that. He has had the problem for over a year now and has seen a dermatologist who has taken biopsies so hopefully we will find the answer. So glad yours was sorted.

Thomas45 profile image
Thomas45 in reply toLaurenNat1

It was sorted, but it took 4 years to get totally rid of it It appeared that Bisoprolol somehow changed the pH of my skin

Certain foods which I had eaten without problems for years before the Bisoprolol, such as bananas, grapes, and tomatoes would always bring out a rash. I can now eat all of them without any rash. I was on 40mg of Ceterizine for about a month, then a lower dose, down to the normal dose 10mg.

That’s really interesting as I was blue-lit into A & E last year with breathing difficulties and while body urticaria. Hospital diagnosed allergy to Flecanaide which I had been on for some time, but also I had a cold virus lurking that had never quite developed. They took a sample of the rash but result was normal. Heart rate very high so they kept me in for 10 days but the rash dissappeared in three. Breathing still bad as have severe COPD as well as persistent AF but pace and ablate procedure may help. Now on Carvedilol which doesn't seem to cause any problems, but I have cetrizine just in case anything does!

Hi

Some Jasmine is a noxious WEED.

Contact your Council. Your community shouldn't need to put up with it.

Nexr doors Jamine has blown over to be adding to my LADY DI vine. I am also allergic to it.

Also have Eastern Cotton which is a weed poisonous to animals and humans , a spreader, and in Napier Hastings it is eradication. It has red berries and it suffercates other plants.

I have to deal with new neighbours and the last lot put this in before they left. It is over fence now. FNDC say I can spray my side of the fence. I got 2 copies of poisonious plant book. I will write a note in it. 3rd notice!

The former neighbour which has a falling 1m retaining wall full of brought in soil of 1m.

On it was growing a iron bark ucalypsis tree. Mature it came out i flower with the oil filled buds hitting my white building and splattering it with off-white oil.

I gave them a scenario to remove it or they would be charged to repaint my unit.

They cut it down.

The retaining long 1/2 round timber longways is held up by my 2 warrhatyes. Much strance as it ispacked with broken concrete pieces behind it. Soil to my property. Illegal. I am the downward drop which was prior undulating down and not a drop of 1m.

Fight for your health and rights.

Take photos and take it into your council Regional here.

Thank you kindly for your reply and information regarding Jasmine(WEED).

I find it noxious and obnoxious rolled into one. Has been in flower for a few days now and not normally this long.

Where is that chainsaw??

Cheers Cam

I sometimes take diphenhydramine hydrochloride (a drowsy antihistamine) to help me sleep. No negative consequences. You probably wouldn’t want to take it during the daytime but it might help you if the tree is interfering with your sleep.

Thank you, that is good to know re the sleep side of things. Cheers Cam

I take 180mg Fexofenadine daily and can take up to 3 a day if I need it with no issues.

We are all different.

I have had a major Urticaria outbreak in the past couple of weeks caused by Topical Steroid Ointment.

I was prescribed Fexofenadine but the medication caused my blood pressure to peak at 185/115 and my normal resting heart rate doubled.

I am not a happy bunny.

I have 120mg of Fexofenadine twice daily to enable me to tolerate my other medications. There haven’t been any problems with it.

I avoid taking Chlorphenamine Maleate (sold here in the UK under the name Piriton) as it makes my heartbeat irregular. It’s one of the first generation (drowsy-making) antihistamines and I used to use it all the time to relieve itching and get a good nights sleep. I’m not sure what it is that has the arrhythmic effect, but I don’t take it even though my allergy specialist wants me to!

I was told not to take antihistamines any more once my PAF was finally diagnosed but have found homeopathic alternatives very helpful when necessary.
