Apixiban causing swollen finger joints?

Have been on 5mg x 2 daily for last 5 years.

About 3 months ago some of my finger joints began to stiffen and ache. Slowly getting worse. Realise could just be age related. No history in my family. I’m 69 with paroxysmal. Also take 1.25mg bisoprolol daily.

Last week I forgot to take my daily dose of Apixiban. First time in 5 years.

Hands felt normal next day!

Probably coincidence.

Anyone have issue with Apixiban and joint issues/swelling?

I have no health issues other than afib.

I checked side-effects on drugs.com and it does list joint pain or swelling as an uncommon (0.1-1.0%) side effect of apixaban.

This side-effect should be in the patient information leaflet as well. It certainly needs further investigation if it continues.

Hopefully you will get real world experience from others on the Forum.

Good luck.

Thank you ozziebob. Will discuss first with friend who’s pharmacist then my GP if I can get an appointment. Maybe generic versions are the issue?

Anyway won’t be risking stopping taking unless something else prescribed.

Interesting. I switched to Apixaban from Edoxaban a few months ago and I'm pretty happy with it but I hadn't related some new night time finger pain with the switch. So yes, I have some pain in the middle two fingers of both hands at night and there is some overlap with switching to Apixaban. But the pain is mild and I've just added it to the plethora of aches and pains that let me know I'm still in the game.

Thank you MM for reply. Interesting to hear if anyone else has similar experience but as I mentioned I’ve have only relatively recently had issue after being on Apixiban for 5 years. I have over that period also had various generic versions of the drug. Maybe that’s the cause?

Maybe you could ask your GP to prescribe eliquis apixaban as I found the generic versions didn’t agree with me.

Tapanac thank you, I think that should be my first step.
