Blood pressure meds & Apixaban

Can blood pressure medication be taken alongside APIXABAN? I’ve got raised BP and just trying to get an understanding and overview before I get the call back from my GP. I’ve tried googling but not getting clear answers. Just curious whether anyone is on both an anticoagulant and BP meds? Thanks in advance for any info …

I'm on BP meds and Warfarin ... no sweat. Been doin' this for 15 years.

Of course. Very common. High BP is one of the criteria for anticoagulation in AF.

Thanks Bob, I’ve read that some BP meds interfere with APIXABAN being metabolised and may increase chances of bleeding. The BP med my doc wants to put me on, Lercanipidine, isn’t contraindicated but from what I can see it isn’t a great fit so proceeding with caution. Any thoughts much appreciated.

Yes, I am prescribed 2.5mg of Lisinopril with Apixaban.

I only assume that if one takes Apixaban the BP dosage may be reduced but most doctors prescribe both depending on the individual.

Hi

Um. Not sure of your thinking.

An anti-co.agulant is divo NOT reduced if you are taking a BP med. But I wouldn;t be taking them together.

I'm on PRADAXA 110 x twice day.

I am on apixaban and losartan. I would say this is a common prescription. Mine is given, I was told, to protect the ventricles rather than for my BP, which is normal.

Yes been on Losartan for 20 years, and Apixaban alongside for 7.

I take my BP tablet, Amlodipine in the morning and my anti coagulant, Edoxaban at night.

Yes, I have taken Apixaban for at least 8 years and Losartan for the last 2 years. I always ask about combinations of drugs when prescribed a new medication and this combination has never raised any concerns with the Cardiologist, EP and GP that were asked.

yes it’s normal. They may try a few different things so don’t get discouraged. I’m happy to say I haven’t had interactions. I am on Xarelto and losartan.

So far it seems that most people are on Lostarton - I’m thinking maybe that one is better with an anticoagulant? . The one they’re proposing for me is Lercanipidine.

you could ask your doctor why that particular one I have been on losartan even before a fib. everyone is different. It may be more cost-effective. I don’t know. I’ve never heard of the one you’re on, but I don’t know a lot of them and I don’t always know generic names without looking it up. The one you mentioned might be a favorite of his. It doesn’t hurt to ask, but what is good for me may not be good for you. I am also on metoprolol. Having the watch man may make things different for you. Best of luck I am always thankful when I have a good match without side effects.

For sure, I e been on BP meds and Apaxiban for a few years now with no issues.

A bit cheeky but can I please ask which BP med you’re on? They are proposing to start me on Lercanipidine.

No probs. I’m taking Lisinopril and HTZ (it’s a combined med)@12.5mg per day. Been in the BP meds for about 6 years now and started Apaxiban when my Afib was identified 3 years back. I’m post ablation and looks like I’ll need a second if my additional Betablocker isn’t successful so I’m on a mix of lots of meds and all has been fine for me

TBH these guys know what meds interact badly with each other so you should take some comfort from that. Just make sure if you have any other health issues that the DR knows about it as that may impact the types of blood thinner or BP meds they prescribe. EG I have asthma so there was one of the preferred BP meds that wasn’t a good fit for me. Hope that helps and hope the meds work out well for you!!

Thank you! I do feel confident - it always takes me a few days to adjust to changes. I put off starting Apixaban for months before finally taking the plunge and I’ve had zero issues plus am reassured that I’m protected to an extent. I simply read that some BP meds can interfere with Apixaban metabolising correctly but in fairness I don’t really know what that means for me so it’s silly to worry. Like you rightly say, they know what they’re doing.
