Up to 80% of strokes could be preventable

Hi HUC.

This is an interesting read for afibbers. I can't link due to forum rules about getting admin's permission first but it's easy to find. Just Google:

Healthline 80% of Strokes Are Preventable. Here's How to Reduce Your Risk October 24 2024

It should be the first one that comes up.

The guidelines are significant also with updated holistic advice on stroke risk reduction. In my own family I realize it's very important to underscore the important role of early intervention and lifestyle management. Also mentions the social factors that sometimes seem to be forgotten yet can play a determining role.

Thank you Paul. 9 months ago I had a stroke and several TIA's whilst I was in A&E on the cardiac monitor in the process of being diagnosed with AF. I know now that my undiagnosed AFand untreated hypertension were the cause of these CV events but I'll be interested in reading what you have brought to our attention. Knowledge is immeasurable.

Horrible Healthline website that always blocks my viewing it's articles because I refuse to allow their advertising cookies on my phone.

It's very much what the BHF recommends for heart health but when you consider the huge increase in obesity in the USA, portion sizes and type and quality of food, I'm not at all surprised it needs spelling out . My son spent 3 months over there and gained 18lbs purely because of portion sizes and the number of takeaways.

The advice on early intervention is paramount but how can that happen here when wait times in A&E are regularly up to 15 hours? a friend's mum collapsed and was given CPR before being rushed to A%E yesterday but it was over 2 hours before she was even assessed and would have been a lot longer if her daughter hadn't raised the roof.

there is a need to assess and prioritise and the older generation will be left

Hi Lacey.

I hope not as it is mainly older people who are at risk.

Percentage of people with AFib

65–85: Approximately 70% of people with AFib are 75+

The risk of AFib increases with age, and the risk doubles with each decade of ageing. At age 80, AFib rates are above 20%

Hi Lacey.

I fully understand. Action is the key. Take control of your action - become a pest and ask for the treatment you need. The Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) is a good start,
