ablation trouble

hi all, I’m 29 fit and very sporty! All but a couple of years ago in went into AF and continued until cardio version. A year later and I went back into AF again, filled by another CV. And again back into AF.

I have now has my first ablation, all went well, no scar tissue or problems with my heart. Followed guidelines and after 4 wk back in AF again 😞, and now waiting for CV again ! What’s next I’m getting concerned I’m running out of options ! I am desperate to get back to normal !

Not uncommon to need a second ablation, but 4 weeks is relatively soon - someone will hopefully post the AFA links for the info sheets.

But the sporty bit and your age got my attention - you probably have a degree of "vagally-mediated AFib". Characterised by episodes starting at night, after food, during recovery after exercise and frequent in athletes who have a low resting heart rate. Have a search around the net, and even ChatGPT has a reasonable handle on it. First properly described by the famous French cardiologist Prof Phillippe Coumel, and there are some Youtube videos by Dr Sanjay Gupta of York Cardiology (UK).

Sometimes a bit of gentle exercise can pop you back into NSR.

Thank you, I have read about that and wondered.

It is early days but the sooner you can have the CV the better your chance of long lasting NSR. Next step would be a second ablation, as already stated, not uncommon. You are a long way from running out of options. Good luck.

I found when I was young doing a quick hit session in the park would get me back into sinus. That worked from 1993-2022 in total about 6 times. Since 2022 I’ve been Cardioverted 3 times as I thought being 65 was too risky to go for a run and besides my knees wouldn’t let me sprint anymore! I went into AF last Sunday, spoke to Cardiologist on Monday about having a HIT on my indoor bike and rode about 5 km then did 5 x 15 sec bursts. It worked again! The caveat here is you must ask your cardiologist if it’s ok to try and listen to their advice. I figure mine has been Vagal in nature

wow ! I have actually tried running etc but not HIT. It’s just this time I so feel different as in symptomatic, like my heart doesn’t want to ! Whereas before I could do and not feel too much if that makes sense ? Wonder if my heart is still healing after the ablation ?

It will still be healing and until scar tissue forms ablation cannot be judged to be a success which is for most people around 12 weeks although the younger you are the quicker you will heal.

Wonder if my heart is still healing after the ablation ?

Definitely you can still be healing and improving for up to a year.

hello although I haven’t had the procedure.I have seen many posts regarding getting AF weeks after procedure.i think that maybe a blip and you will go back to NSR.as I’ve heard that q few times on here.but I do agree 4 weeks is very short from all that I’ve learnt on this site.i am going to try and go with a pacemaker if that’s possible.all the best and hope you feel much better soon.

Early days seriously- after mine all good for a week then went to hell and 2 episodes of 160bpm AFib/tachycardia - each lasts 4 - 5 days - never had episodes that lasted more than 10 hours before. Plan was if didn’t self convert that they’d try a drug and if not cardio version but didn’t get to the point - all settled down after that but episode immediately stopped after glass of bicarb followed by chewing raw garlic - sounds mad I know but it worked for me - somehow shocked me out of it - good luck, stay positive for now and remember it can take some time for inflammation and healing to get you to a good point

My cardiologist gave me flecainide as a pill in the pocket. Your heart has to have normal structure apparently after a stress test. I have PAF and had 3 x cardioversions before that. Now I take a flecainide , wait an hour then another, usually works quickly after that.😁

I am sorry to hear about your difficult AFIB.

At your age I would consider very seriously Randall Wolf Mini-Maze . Look Dr Wolf videos on the subject available on youtube.

I was going to do it but at my age eighty ++ My condition didn’t require it.
