From a number of Diet Myths on Weight Loss Forum on HU

Fantastic, unmissable if you are struggling to lose weight or even if you’re not; it may challenge your misconceptions or prejudices.

Most useful thing I’ve watched lately is by Eran Segal, his research has determined that in order to lose weight you have to eat the foods that are right for you, it’s related to insulin. Makes a lot of sense, video on youtube, articles online, very much worth a look if you find you can’t shift it. I’ll be starting his recommendations as I’ve struggled for years. It’s not a diet, it’s about tracking insulin spikes following meals.

This is the ZOE concept as well . Mrs Omniscient tried it for a while. Didn't work for her though she changed her eating habits slightly to match.

I too tried Zoe, it was an expensive mistake. I recognized the principles for the BS were the same and I had the glucose monitor. I found Zoe quite hard work, constant info thrown at you, there was a lot to try and take in and worse, when I'd paid for six months I was told I'd completed the course so I thought I didn't need to pay, cancelled and within days I was locked out of my account. I've never had access since so all my data is denied to me. To say I was cross is putting it mildly. Totally wouldn't budge, if I wanted access I had to pay, £43 a month, so I didn't. Could access the BS readings either on a separate app. I think maybe just 2 weeks of the BS monitor might be worth it as I have Segal's book to guide me.

Mrs O joined, did the study, copied all she could, and left, so similar to you probably.

That's the bit I never thought to do, copy it. When I was complaining to one of their advisors after they blocked my account, her advice was "well you could copy it", er, not if you've locked me out 🙄

I didn’t need to lose weight on Zoe, and didn’t but my inflammation levels (as measured through HS-CRP) have gone right down. It has changed the way I eat. I am the sort of person who needs the prompts that the app provides. It could be coincidence but only had one AF episode so far this year, compared with 4 last year. That said, I’ll still take the ablation when offered.

I have written before about my wife's late aunt, a lady who put all the national diet clubs out of business locally with the club she ran for years. She was never svelte, but lived till her mid 90s and always had to diet herself.

Her mantra was simple: calories in must be fewer than calories out, and that diet, not exercise, was the best way to achieve this. Of course, she promoted daily exercise (as a walk with a hill in part of it) for the general health, but not for losing weight.

Her way was to keep eating everything you are used to, but a little less of it. She claimed that all fad diets were destined to fail. Hers was a slower, long term way to lose weight but it also kept it off. She used to say that the weight crept slowly on, so using a way to make it creep slowly off was more natural and would endure.

I have never needed to diet until recently after my bisoprolol dosage was doubled. With the help of my wife, I followed her Auntie Beryl’s plan and, lo and behold, several months later, I am back to my normal weight.

I think I agree entirely with this lady. It all depends how much you put in your mouth.

Ultimately, I have always felt that rationally, it has to be so (excluding those who suffer fluid retention for medical reasons).

I realised yesterday when I had to walk 300 yards on the flat, that I was out of condition. The 300 yards would have been on the flat if it hadn't been for the annual village market on the only flat road in the village. I went downhill by the doctors because there's a handrail there to help, and up a street about 80 yards long and certainly uphill as it has a handrail up the steepest part.I realise I need to lose weight. It wasn't so long ago that I was on an NHS course to lose weight as I was in the pre-diabetes range. That told us to cut out added sugar, processed food, and to walk for 30 minutes a day.

The weight came off

I ate lots of vegetables, but this summer I've been lazy. The comfort food has come back. I could happily spend all day updating my village website, but if we had some decent weather I would be happy gardening all day.

I have permanent though asymptomatic AF, which doesn't bother me, am asthmatic, have lymphoedema in my lower legs. Walking more would help my legs a little, but I can't walk fast as nerve damage of my right peroneal nerve means I cannot dorsiflex my right foot, so wear an ankle foot orthotic which helps me to walk, and I use a stick for balance. I am over 6'6" tall, aged 79.
