Perindopril

Howdy all, me again.Had a telephone appt with my EP following April's cardioversion.

All has been well, touch wood, but still waiting for my valve repair op, so the EP is going to chat to the surgeon (I've left messages on his secretary's voicemail but she hasn't got back to me).

Meantime, he has advised me to take 4mg Perindopril. I said I don't have a blood pressure problem, in fact, its very good but he says it helps strengthen the heart muscle.

Anyone else had this prescribed for this reason?

I'm reluctant to take another bloomin tablet and have any associated side effects.

Any thoughts guys?

Thanks in anticipation.

It is an Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors

I was prescribed it to lessen the workload on my heart because of mitral regurgitation.

By Mayo Clinic Staff

These medicines are commonly used to treat high blood pressure, heart problems and more.

Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors are medicines that help relax the veins and arteries to lower blood pressure. ACE inhibitors prevent an enzyme in the body from making angiotensin 2, a substance that narrows blood vessels. This narrowing can cause high blood pressure and forces the heart to work harder.

Good luck

Thanks. I knew what it was but didn't want to consult Dr Google too much. 😁. Better to ask those who have taken it for reasons other than lowering BP. Are you still on it and any side effects?

Yes, still on it. I have low blood pressure at baseline, so I did struggle in the beginning.

No other side effects for me,

My BP is pretty much perfect (about the only thing that is 😁) so I didn't want that messed up.

Initial cough, nothing subsequently

Thanks. I had read that was a common side affect and not one I particularly fancy, especially at night. 😊

There are several "cardioprotective" drugs that help the ventricles stay healthy for longer. I was given losartan despite having a normal BP. I read online around this and found evidence that it is not uncommon medical practice and good for us.

Thanks Steve. Just didnt want my near perfect BP to drop and face a barage of other side effects.

That's just what I felt. In the event, it hasn't really happened. I think these antihypertensive drugs work only on high blood pressures. On people like you and me, their effect is different. At least, I have found that my BP has been fine, dropping from something like 120/80 to maybe 112/60 at worst, but often still pretty much as before. When I doubled my dose of bisoprolol from 1.25mg to 2.5mg, however, my already of slow heart rate fell further and my BP followed suit, so I did have to go back to 1.25mg.

Thanks. My BP is about the one thing that isn't wrong with me 🤣. As for Bisoprolol, I wouldn't take it again for a million quid and a date with Fernando Alonso. 😄

Morning! No I haven't had that situation. I wonder if its a very low dose, so may not affect your blood pressure too much but add to heart efficiency?

I was prescribed diazapam 4mg for chronic back pain. Immediately thought 'oh I see he's tranquillising me to shut me up complaining!'

But it was explained that the low dose was to relax the muscles.

Hope you get sorted with that valve repair, really far too long now!

Take care Ducky, expect this nice rain is suiting you lol! Xx

I'd rather have the sunshine 😃. Its been 2.5 years since first told I needed the op, then they thought it had improved and took them 6 months to decide it hadn't, then sidelined May last year as I had an eye op, supposed to be back on the list July last year and haven't heard a thing since.Secretary doesn't bother returning calls. Dr Yusuf was not impressed at all.

Ooh Ducky I think it's time for banging on desks. That's ridiculous 😒 Could PALS liason? Or we could do a 2 woman vocal protest out the front, get Coventry Live in?you must be so frustrated 😠

They will have you back on the Diazapam if you start misbehaving 🤣.No need for banging. Dr Yusuf told me he was going to speak to the surgeon himself..... and he will.

I suppose I could have been more proactive myself but pushed it to the "don't want to think about it" section in my head. Having to have the DCCV in April has brought it to the forefront again.

I've got a break booked in October so they'll have to wait for after that. I've put things off for the past 2.5 years, in case I got a call so I'm not putting this off.

I am probably an isolated case. but when I was prescribed perindopril during and after an angioplasty I suffered a permanent reduction in kidney function. The patient information information leaflet says that your GP may want to do blood tests to check that your kidneys are working well.

Ducky2003 profile image
Ducky2003 in reply to Bolander

Gosh, that doesn't sound good. How long were you taking it for? Did you have any kidney issues prior? I have previously so will get back in touch with the EP.
