Evening All, I was wondering does anyone get really very very unnaturally shattered after say walking 20 miles over a weekend but nothing strenuous? My head has been sore and I feel ill for several days after, felt great while walking. Had a couple bad af episodes a couple days after. I just want to sleep. Still shattered today 4 days later. Thanks Guys

Yes I always had similar issues with exercise and fatigue but as I have 2 conditions, both of which feature fatigue & weakness, never quite sure which is kicking in.

What I DO know is I now have to pace myself carefully so do exercise in small chunks - on advice from GP specialist who calls it exercise snacking.

There is no way I could walk 20 miles in a weekend but I can do intensive exercise for 2 mins & 2 minutes rest.

We all need what type of exercise suits us individually. I now have a timer on my watch when I garden as I now realise I need to stop before the fatigue kicks in, even though I want to carry on at the time.

I garden till my back tells me I've done enough- usually about 2 hrs 30min. I know I should probaby stop before but it's amazing how you don't notice time going by when engaging in your favourite pastime! Never happens with the housework. I used to have a timer in my gardening bucket but it got lost .My watch is actually older than I am (a wedding present from my father to my mother) so far too precious to risk in the garden.

Hi there...First of all I like to give a warm welcome joining this forum. .Lots of advice is given on here and also making new friends...I have just read your post and the same thing happens to me, I go out walking the dogs for around 60mins depending on the weather, after I come back start to feel I have no energy to do things and start to feel exhausted and start to feel unwell. I think it's all to do with how much stress we are doing to one's Heart, even if you were to walk on flat ground it's still the same outcome, when iam doing DIY around the house after about 40mins of work I have too rest for 10mins or more before carrying on...i would my advice is to goto your local doctors and explain to them how you are feeling....hope you get something sorted out for yourself...take care..

No, I wish!!! Perhaps assess your level of fitness, ie what it was to what it is now, maybe 20 miles is too long and/or there is something else going on in your body. Make a few notes and seek medical advice, either your GP or cardiologist because as I see it, AF every 7 days should not be so debilitating as to make you this tired, especially if you have a good level of overall fitness.....this is just my point of view of course.

20 miles in a weekend! Wow ,well done but. that is strenuous to me considering our hearts are not as efficient as they could be. If you are so affected days later I think its perhaps wise to cut down.

You seem to be describing extreme fatigue with some brain fog (sore head), a marked departure from your normal expereience post exercise. I suspect that it may not be your afib per se. Have you had your bloods checked recently.

Yes bloods all good, apart from they said I have to have another in 3 months time to recheck my thyroid

If you are borderline for hypothyroidism then you can get very fatigued. Treatment and diagnosis for hypo are rubbish. Often a TSH of between 5 and 10 is treated as subclinical and no treatment is given . It can take years for the TSH to climb above the magic number they stick to - by which time you have put on a shedload of weight that you never shift and have lost the outer third of your eyebrows and lots of your head hair. As well as feeling rubbish a lot of the time.

I was the same at one time, could do long walks in the morning but then wanted to sleep afternoons. It would feel like I'd used all my energy up. Then I had a blood test which showed an underactive thyroid. Tablets for that gave me my energy back.

I agree with Auriclaire, NHS acceptable TSH levels are high. Here in the UK it's over 5 when they may prescribe medication but in other countries it's a lot lower at 2.

Thank you for your post - since Afib diagnosis, my stamina and strength have drastically reduced and I'm beginning to feel that strenuous exercise is actually a trigger. I don't feel it at the time, say if I garden for hours without stopping, I actually feel good (and normal) while doing it. But then Afib tends to kick in that night or evening. I don't really understand it.

I'm frankly amazed and impressed that you walk 20 miles ..

No, because I'd have got totally exhausted after walking 100 yards, and that would need a couple of stops to get my heart rate down to less than 120 bpm and my breath back. That's the reality of persistent fast AF which, though controlled by a cocktail of 7 medications has caused major heart failure and torn my mitral valve. Currently waiting to see cardiac surgeon on Monday.

Enjoy being able to exercise!

My dream is to be able to walk my dog around the block.

I'd get this checked as there many things it could be such as anaemia or under active thyroid for example. 🙏

well if you were 85 I’d say well done and don’t be bothered. I’m mid 70’s probably never walked 20 miles in a weekend ..so I would expect to be knackered if I did this ..even before any hearty problems..

I recently went on holiday in Wales for a few days.Did much the same if not more.I was exhausted, rib pain, upper back pain & congestion in my lungs.Took me a few days to get over it.

However I am in NSR after ablation last year.

However I do suffer ectopics.

Hi Rubble, i do be shattered after a 20 minute walk never mind 20 miles.

I think it depends on your training. Twenty miles on a weekend would be too big a jump if the rest of your days are largely sedentary.

Hi, you don't say your age which for most people makes a difference. Most people over 65 I know could not do 20 mls in a wkend, and they wouldn't regard themselves as ill or unfit. Also depends on your pace, I assume cos you are doing so much you must be walking quite quickly, cos you are talking about 10hrs in time for the average walker. Lastly, all medics I've encountered through AF say strenuous exercise doesn't help and can trigger bouts of AF.
