Experiences with dry needling and Xarelto

I had dry needling done for a neck issue 5 days ago by a physiotherapist.

Was ok initially but today my neck is swollen and painful radiating down my arm. Could this indicate bleeding or just a bruised muscle? Its not red or anything.

Any ideas appreciated.

Ellie

If it isn’t showing bruising I doubt very much but you should be ringing the Physiotherapist and give feedback and ask if this is normal and what you should do.

From what I know as a grandson had quite a lot of dry needling whilst an athlete, swelling can indicate an inflammatory reaction.

Thanks, probably better to just phone and ask.

If you mean acupuncture I have had this several times whilst taking warfarin with no advers reaction. I think you should speak to your physio.

No it’s not acupuncture Bob - dry needling is something only done by MSK specialists and Athelete Physios for completely different purpose - usually acute or chronic pain in muscle/tendon/ligaments. It’s not a pleasant experience as you do often feel the needles, unlike acupuncture. If a needle catches a nerve it can cause inflammation.

I think you should call the GP and get this checked asap.It may or may not be linked to the dry needling , but sounds like an inflammatory response to a change in your neck .

It's unlikely to be bleeding or clotting under the skin but you can't rule that out entirely without a check up.

Personally, I wouldn't have acupuncture or dry needling with aFib, especially in the neck and shoulders, for two reasons .

1) A hypersensitivity response or vagal nerve reaction to those treatments could trigger a aFib event.

2) If you are on blood thinners, anticoagulants or antiplatelet medications you are more at risk of having minor bleeding or bruising under the skin which itself can cause inflammation, making the pain being treated worse rather than better, and increasing the risk of a hypersensitivity reaction which can trigger aFib.

Hope you get seen soon and it improves quickly. Take care , Bee

I’m having acupuncture into my neck and shoulder at present by a very knowledgeable physiotherapist. And I’m impressed by it. I looked into it and it’s okay when on blood thinners. The only thing any research I looked at said that in a few cases there was micro bleeds. When the site spotted a small amount of blood for 30/60 seconds. I’ve not had any problems. And my heart arrhythmia’s arnt bothered by it 😂.
