Pain in neck and back with AF

I am really struggling at the moment. My PAF is returning every day for hours on end and is accompanied by pain in my throat, neck and back as well as in my chest. It is very difficult to sleep when this is happening.

I get warning of it coming on as I get a sensation of pressure in my throat. Bizarrely the pain in my back and neck is along the right side of my spine - not the left as I might have expected.

Am I a freak, or does anyone else get this?

Goodness, no I've never had that pain. If I did I'd be calling someone for help.Jean

If you are in the UK why not dial the 111 NHS no. for advice.

The important thing to rule out would be angina. I would ring 111.

when I had persistent AF , I definitely got the neck and back pain but not the throat sensation . When I had my first cryoablation under sedation I felt terrible pain in my jaw and throat when they ablated the pulmonary veins , it was very uncomfortable . So I would definitely get checked out , as Rambler said could be angina . Please let us know the outcome x

Thank you for your replies. I am seeing the cardiologist tomorrow so will discuss with him. Just recovering from sleepless night with AF plus pains as above. It is very hard to sleep when it is like this.

I was prescribed Flecainide to take as a PIP originally and it always ended AF episodes in a few hours. Hope you get sorted soon.

Make sure you get this checked out and that you notify your, GP, Cardiologist and/or EP about this. All changes in symptoms should be investigated. I would ring 111 and ask for advice.

Poor you! I’ve never experienced anything like that. Hope 111 does prove helpful.

I get discomfort under my left ribs and into my back and feel a sensation in my throat. I feel that the reduction in heart / oxygenated blood output brought on by AF varies a lot between sufferers, and that it can surely affect lots of things. It can bring on mild angina, for example, and the blood flow around the heart also includes the diaphragm. Your food pipe presses against the heart, too, so could easily be affected (mine is).

I would ask your GP about it but I feel sure it is nothing to worry about. I struggle to sleep with AF and end up taking a sleeping tablet (2.5mg zolpidem).

If you are really worried l would go to A/E because you will have an immediate check of your heart and bloods. Your GP is not really experienced in heart matters and would probably refer you anyway. I know we all loathe the wait at A/E but you need to feel safe. I was told by them that they would rather me go if my symptoms were worrying than having to deal with something worse.
