Esomoprazole and ablation recovery

Does nothing go right for me or am I just a complete wimp.The aura headaches continue since my ablation last Tuesday (albeit less intense and less frequent). Not been a good sleeper for a long time and blame the meds but .....now I am getting nightmares and waking almost every hour.

To add insult to injury I had diarrhea last night and now concerned it's the esomoprazole as this was given to me because lansoprazole did the very same thing when I took it with steroids a couple of years ago.

Has anyone else had these problems, if so what did you do to help them?

Other than this I am doing ok, went a short walk in the sunshine yesterday and had a light lunch in a cafe. Leg wound healed marvellously.

Hiya. Sounds like a panic. The aura headaches are associated with post ablation sometimes and will probably disappear sooner or later. Could be worse if you got the migraine with it afterwards. I get them, not from ablation, after 15 mins gone no migraine.

The rest of your issues are what. Prob best to just change the esomoprazole. If concerned I would speak to the parmacist for options.

No AF or otherwise tho. ! All these issues will should settle down. We all have some issue or other after ablation therapy.

And you are not a wimp. Its difficult going thru all AF and ablation. Not easy at all.

Optical auras are very common, I get them when I get overanxious (which is frequently) along come the zigzags and spots, fortunately seldom a headache. Usually if I close my eyes and relax for 20 minutes and take half of one of my anti-anxiety pills, they go. My Opthalmic surgeon says there is nothing he can do about them! Maybe your anxiety is increasing over the issue post ablation and that is making the situation worse !

I had diarrhoea on lansaprazole, told to stop taking immediately and go back to my regular medication for reflux which has now been withdrawn unfortunately.

Do you take anything? Or did you for the 6 weeks after ablation as instructed (assuming you had an ablation).When I was in steroids my GP took me off Lansoprazole because of the diarrhoea and put me on Famotidine which was ok for me. I think anything ending in 'ozole' is going to do the same thing unfortunately. I will call the arrythmia nurses on Tuesday. I don't think they will be there tomorrow

That was after my ablation. I used to take ranitidine regularly but now I eat fresh pineapple most days and take Gaviscon if needed. I also got an adjustable bed so I very seldom get reflux at night now.

Hi again, I've had a very unsettled stomach since my ablation last monday. I do have IBS but it's been very controlled for a long time and I take Esomeprazole every day. Since the ablation, I've felt nauseous and feel like I have the most painful dose of indigestion. However, it isnt eased by the usual gaviscon etc. I had a general anaesthetic though, and been wondering if there was something in that, that has disagreed with me. Maybe there is something similar with sedation?? I dont know, but I do hope you feel better soon x

Intubation might cause your “indigestion”. Sleeping elevated big help too. I got electric bed too. Sleep with upper body almost sitting up.

Hi there, yes, I do think the cocktail of drugs, anaesthetic has something to do with it. The nurse told me in hospital that was probably the case. I do believe sedation has similar effects. I too have IBS (diagnosed in 2022 after a CT colonoscopy), which started after taking lansoprazole. I never had any digestive issues before.

I felt really nauseous after the ablation, sweating, agitated and with a dry mouth. It did wear off but I am left with an upset stomach too.

Perhaps we are expecting too much too soon, after all someone has been 'dancing around in our hearts' for a while.

Where did you have your ablation?

So pleased to see that you're much more positive. The headaches etc will come and go for a month, just take paracetamol for them. I've found that certain lights set my occular migraines off, then the headaches follow.

Hi there and hope the after-effects of ablation soon settle. I was lucky not to have migraine symptoms, but had gut issues for a couple of months post ablation. My arrhythmia team don’t prescribe PPIs automatically but my GP prescribed them when I started experiencing bad acid reflux. I hated them, but they eased the problem until the oesophagus healed and I stopped taking them asap. Please be patient and do plenty meditation and breathing exercises. I found the Balance app brilliant, and still do. Use the healing time for the small things in life and know your body is a miracle healer, it will mend itself! And do keep posting here, this forum was my greatest support when I was feeling knocked sideways! 🤗

I had my ablation a year ago and quite honestly I felt like I had been hit by a bus for at least six weeks, possibly longer. Maybe it was my age but the “take a week off” instruction that I was given was totally unrealistic. You had a major operation, although there is not much to see from the outside, and you need to give it time. The headaches recurred on and off for quite a while and I took a lot of painkillers. I had terrible indigestion at about the 4 week stage but fortunately omeprazole worked - however there are other drugs so maybe talk to your GP? Enjoy the spring and be kind to yourself - it will get better. This forum is so helpful for encouragement I found as I felt quite alone. Best wishes.

Make sure you keep well hydrated if you have the diar horror. we always keep sachets of rehydration salts which you make up into drinks in the medicine cupboard for such times.

I would contact your EP and ask about the esomoprazole and if it can be changed - failing that as it's a bank holiday weekend ask your pharmacist.

We all feel like a wimp when going through health situations and accompanying strange symptoms. I realize that saying "just hang in there" doesn't help much, but you'll see improvements down the road soon. So -- just hang in there!
