THROAT & AF

A quick question.

My AF, usually trouble free and well controlled has made a little reappearance lately - and I’ve noticed this warning sign - A tension in my throat. A sense of unease and then this tension in my throat which seems to always precede AF. Anyone else have this?

Yes - me, too. The oesophagus sometimes naturally presses against the heart and can, I believe, become affected by the arrhythmia (even gulping can set off AF, I have read).

Thanks - it’s good to know I’m not alone but given you’re the only other I’m assuming it’s not exactly a common. Many thanks for the reply.

When I was in hospital, the arrhythmia nurse noticed a big ectopic on the monitor when I drank my tea and explained this was the cause.

I’ve read of it several times here. The nearness of the oesophagus is one of the risks associated with an ablation.

I get chest discomfort, too, and a spasm like tightness under the left ribs. That’s rarely stated here but it’s said to be a common symptom by my doctor.

Yes - always for me too. Accompanied by massive burping - and I can't "make" myself burp normally!

I know the feeling! Exactly that …

Exactly that. It's always my first symptom of an episode, whatever the trigger. I liken it to the "lump in the throat" you might get when watching a weepy film (not that I do). My wife also says I get more tetchy than usual a couple of days before, but that might just be me.

I’m glad I’m not the only one - you’ve described it perfectly.

I get pre-AF feelings from time to time lower down in the gut and immediately take action eg sit up if in bed, deep breathing, light activity, prayer leaving it to God and sometimes a slow steady walk focussed on Nature..

What would you describe as "pre-AF feelings"? Thanks.

I am very psymtomatic and over time have improved by listening to my body. I can only describe 'Pre- AF feelings' as feeling a bit odd and I conclude it must be Pre-AF as it is a kind of larger internal feeling not attributable to anything else and disappears when I take action.

Hope something there makes sense 😁.

I also get a "pre-AF feeling" occasionally, I can only describe it as a state of unease. Maybe Jittery. Most of mine happen in the early morning. I feel the unease, than wake up and most of the time it goes away.

But sometimes it moves into AF. I think its my heart trying to avoid going into AF. This last one on Monday, while sleeping according to my Watch, my HR jumped from 50/60 to 80s at around 4-6 am. When I woke at 7 or so, it was in the 90s, and then checked, said AF and off to the races at 125 bpm.

I guess I was in AF at 4 and just did not know it(got up to the restroom at 4), but felt unease.

Yes like a lump in the throat, but since meds, no more .

Yes I get a feeling of constriction/tension in my throat that alerts me to the possibility I might be in afib. This happens especially if my afib wakes me up.

Yes, a tension is a good word to describe what I feel - it’s really a strange feeling.

Yes! I don't always get it but mostly I do.I have my first appointment with a cardiologist shortly and I have been wondering how to describe this, and your description of tension is bob on.

Thanks, I'm going to use it.😊
