Apixaban allergy

southkorea profile image
33 Replies

Am I the only one on this site allergic to both Riveroxaban and apixaban ? First I could not stop itching and then I came out in hard dry itchy patches! I am trying now to take an allergy tablet with apixaban every day and see how that works. I was on warfarin for 15 years without any problems. So if I am still itching in two weeks then i shall go back onto the warfarin!

l can’t tolerate any of the new anticoagulants. I didn’t have itching but l had many horrible side effects. Apixaban upset my nervous system and l was shaking all the time. The only one l can tolerate is Warfarin, so l am thankful it’s still around. I certainly wouldn’t take an allergy tablet along with any medication that doesn’t suit me. It is not working for you, so go back on your Warfarin and don’t put up with all this. All the best.

I agree with Cavalierrubie, why are you putting yourself through this suffering, go back onto warfarin if that suited you. I'm well on Wafarin and was asked today by my docs surgery if I wanted to discus changing to NOAC's with their pharmacist . No way, warfarin has been around for about 60 years, no one knows what the long term effects of the new anticoagulants will be.

Thank you. I lived with a pharmacist for six years and he said exactly what you have said ie warfarin is well tried and tested unlike the new ones

I'm so glad you've mentioned your side effects. I'm also taking apixaban but along with other medication and I wondered which one was making me feel shaky! I also feel light headed. Am seeing a cardiologist on Monday so hopefully when mention this side effect he can change the medication. I'm having awful side effects from some of the other tablets and it's affecting my quality of life but am determined to get to the bottom of it. Thanks again. This site has helped me no end as have only just been diagnosed with AFib.

Maglyn l had a terrible time trying all these different medications. My life was laying on the sofa all day. In the end the only one to suit was Warfarin. I am over sensitive to most of the drugs. I cannot tolerate Bisoprolol taken regularly as it lowers my blood pressure too much. I have this as a pill in the pocket for when l have an attack. It works for me. This is all l take. I found taking Magnesium (spray) and Vitamin B12 has helped. We are all different and it took me 3 yrs to stabalise myself into a decent quality of life. Only you know how you feel so don’t be fobbed off. I think we all have an inbuilt intuition when something is not working. I hope you have a good and understanding Cardiologist that will help you get this sorted out.

Thank you so much Cavalierrubie. I am the same and have always had issues with medication and vaccinations throughout my life. I can almost see doctors rolling their eyes. My mother was the same. I've taken Bisoprolol for a few years on its own but as am now taking quite a few more am now thinking that combined with other medications it too is affecting my BP as suddenly started getting lower and lower. Yet another issue to bring up with the cardiologist. It's so good to hear other people's views and concerns as it makes one feel we're not alone! Maglyn

Perhaps you can reduce some of the medication if your AF can be treated ok. I don’t know your circumstances so have a good talk with your Cardiologist. As said before the drugs don’t suit me and made me worse. It’s trial and error but while that is going on, you are not well. I am sure you will get there in the end. Make sure your drugs are absolutely necessary. Let us know hiw it goes.

Hi, hope your well x

I was prescribed Apixaban last year in January 2023, within the first 2 weeks I had an allergic reaction where my whole body had red patches, they immediately switched me over to adoxaban.

Speak to the heamotogist or the hospital. They will help you..I was ok on Apixaban.

Are you ok on adoxaban ?

I was trialled on apixaban, edoxaban, & rivaroxaban , but unfortunately all three were unsuitable because of severe side effects.

So I'm back on warfarin, which suits me perfectly.

When I started taking Apixaban I was very itchy and had dry patches. My doctor insisted it was not apixaban that caused this and after a few month it improved and years later I am still taking it.

Thank you. I am giving it another two weeks. !! But I think your doctor was wrong as I never had itching or dry patches before!!

Itching and joint pain with apixaban resulted in changing to edoxaban - not so bad for itching but terrible for spotty nose bleeds and gut bleeds. symptoms now resolving to minimal problems but include sleepless nights and heavy sweating.

Thank you for your reply. Sleepless nights are not good fun!!

that’s very interesting (although annoying for you I know), but coincidentally I have the same. I never thought it was anything to do with the apixaban. I just thought it was old age getting to me. Although a couple of years ago my GP did mention Bowens disease

All the best

I have more joint pain on Apixaban and some mild gastric symptoms. It is definitely the Apixaban because I have been off for up to 10 days before my first hip replacement and the joint pain improved . I've also experimented with the dose and it is dose dependent.

I had very bad side effects from both of them and now I’m on warfarin and trying to get my dose correct. I’ve been on other sites and many people have Gastro issues and other issues from the new blood thinners. There are lucky people who do fine, but many don’t so don’t feel crazy you know what it’s doing to you even if the doctor saying no one gets side effects. People do.

I came out in both arms itching and rash, take Dronedarone & Apixaban, put it down to the Dronedarone but might even be combination 🤷🏼‍♀️

Now you have me wondering. My Cardiologist just put me on Edoxoban. A day after starting it, I have developed cold like symptoms with fits of sneezing, and irritated sinuses. I am trying to figure out if I caught a cold, or if it is the Exoxoban! I think I just have a cold, but the timing is strange.

I am on apixaban as well , was fine when had 2.5, my dose was updated to 5 twice a day, and I Itch steady. I asked my cardiologist to put me back on 2.5, said no , I need the higher dose! I am 89 and in Canada. He said there has to be 2 of 3 reasons to lower the dose, that being weight under 130 pounds, over 80 and kidney count down. I only have one, being 89 years old so I scratch! I too get those brown spots!

southkorea profile image

Well I only have one and I am on 2.5 twice s day. I would question what your cardiologist is saying. Get a second opinion. I live in the Uk

Best to swap if you having trouble next choice may be fine and it is so easy and I feel safe now. I really wish you well. I was dreadful on apixaban as was my sister with chronic thigh cramps and I could barely use my legs to stand from squat (abs no problems before)!!. Got put on edoxaban 3 years leg strength came back. and feel great. Fingers crossed all good so far.
