Robitussin for chesty cough, ok to take with AF?

hi

I’ve had chesty cough for about a week now and hoped it would go away without taking meds but it won’t!

Chemist has advised taking Robitussin so I got some but before I take any, I wanted to ask if anyone else who has AF has taken it and is there any danger it will put me in AF?

I take Solotol and Apixaban on daily basis too for the AF.

I have used Robitussin to clear a chesty cough on a couple of occasions without any difficulties. It seems to be effective. BUT, as we are not medically trained on here, you should double check with your pharmacist that there are no issues with your other meds. (The notes included within the pack do not indicate any).

our pharmacist recommended bronco stop as the only thing we could take but I haven’t heard of robitussin either.

Broncho stop didn't work for me at all. I just avoid medication - suck a mint these days and if the cough perists go to my GP.

Here in the States, Robitussin can be bought with both Dextromethorphan and Guaifenesin in it. Guaifenesin is okay as it's only an expectorant, but Dextromethorphan (a cough suppressant) is bad for a-fibbers. Maybe just a generic cough drop would be a better choice for your cough.

Presumably you mentioned your AF to the pharmacist? The active ingredient is a very tried and trusted one called guaifenesin. In truth, these do very little for a chest cough. A recent study showed no cough mixture did much at all except feel comforting.

The only way to help a chesty cough without using really strong drugs is to inhale something that might loosen the thick catarrh and help it come out. Vick or similar in steaming water is at least going to reach the right parts. It would be the best thing but the Robitussin does taste pleasant!
