Amoxiclav

Have just been prescribed this antibiotic.Has anyone taken this and was AF affected?

I haven't taken any antibiotics since having AF and would like to know if antibiotics usually cause problems if you have AF.

I had this in hospital for an appendix abscess and had horrendous diarrhoea and total loss of appetite as I felt sick all the time. The diarrhoea was so bad they eventually changed the antibiotic but not before it had done its damage. I was more ill from this than from the appendix abscess and it took me months to recover. Ask for a different antibiotic. The side effects of this are well known and I have no idea why they still use it.

Thank you for replying.I react badly to many drugs so am a bit wary about anything new.It has been prescribed for suspected diverticulitis.GP wasn't sure and pain has now stopped so don't want to take an unnecessary antibiotic which could make me feel ill.

Yes, thank you. That was several years ago. If I were you in the future, I would not take an antibiotic for suspected problem like diverticulitis unless it had been confirmed that was what I had. The antibiotic would almost certainly make it worse, so I am not sure an antibiotic is what you would need anyway. Something soothing seems more appropriate.

I have done some research on diverticulitis and it seems that the latest trials have found that antibiotics do not make a difference in uncomplicated diverticulitis so I haven't taken them for that reason and also,as you say , it has not been confirmed.Thank you so much for replying.

YES, I was glad to see the back of any disease. If one gets a print out of what works for you, it's relief especially when AMOZIL straight didn't work.

Good to say bye to the infected tooth.

Changing to Amozil-Clav did.

I had it when it was called AUGMENTIN in 1987 after hysterectomy, 1 ovary removed and reason for operation right indirect ingoinal hernia.

I went lower BP during operation, had blood drips, was infected when they tried to see why I had internal blooding.... 3 weeks in local hospital!

It's wonderful to get cured.

Remember follow instructions or/and ask chemist for printout how to take them.

I take Diltiazem daily and online it says take with fod but my chemist who is into natural drugs too says TAKE WITHOUT FOOD. Just water.

My thyroxin is taken early morning and leave 1 hour (now it has been changed from from 1/2 to 1 hour). No milk, iron, for 4 hours. No soy, chlorinated or fluorinated water or toothpaste. Keep greens low.

What we have to do to stay ALIVE!

Keep safe and do keep a look out for side effects. But some we have to tolerate regardless.

I have had these problems with flucloxacillin taken for an infection after root canal work but was taking a large dose and 8 tablets a day. On a lower dose for another infection and fewer tablets a day I had no problems. Always read the leaflet with the tablets and if in doubt ask your pharmacist.

I think you misunderstand. I was actually in hospital at the time. As soon as I told them what was happening, they took me off it but unfortunately the damage was done and it took months to recover.

I misunderstood also. You said nothing about being in hospital in your first post.As for antibiotics generally, I've not had any affects on my AF. I have courses of antibiotics to get rid of infections which cause asthma. Amoxicillin 500 always works for me. It is penicillin -based. It might be that your body doesn't like penicillin, which would require a different antibiotic.

It's not so much the afib, as some of the afib drugs you have to be concerned about. This is especially true with Flecainide and certain classes of antibiotics.

I'm pretty sure Amoxiclav is one of the safe ones, but you should always check with your doctor and/or pharmacist. There are also online drug checkers, but I would not use them as a sole source because they sometimes tend to flag interactions that would not concern most doctors.

I don't know why you're taking the antibiotic, but if prescribed very important to take it, because there can be worse things than side effects and afib.

I only take Nebivolol and have already checked that there is no interaction with this.I have been prescribed it for suspected diverticulitis.GP isn't sure.Just wondering if antibiotics are known to cause AF problems.

I have taken this antibiotic under the name Augmentin without problems but my husband, who does not have AF, reacted badly, possibly to the Clavulanic Acid contained in it and had to be taken off it almost immediately. Amoxicillin alone gave him no problems.

You are right to be careful but you also need to consider the reason it was prescribed for you also.

I was prescribed Augmentin for an infected cut on my shin (I scraped it against the prickle on an aloe plant in my rockery). I started vomiting after the first tablet and did not stop. I phoned my doctor and was told to come immediately as I was by that stage vomiting blood flecks. I should be grateful for the effect, because it was then that my symptomless A fib was diagnosed, I was bundled off to a cardiologist, as my GP feared a dissection due to the blood. I spent the weekend in a cardiac hospital, and left with the default prescription of Bisoprolol and Warfarin ! However, even though my A Fib is familial, (all my sisters have it) - I have to be grateful for Augmentin for revealing mine !!!!!

Dark cloud, silver lining in your case pusillanimous. My husband took one dose and started to have breathing difficulties within a short time. It's amazing how the same drug affects so many people so differently.

My favorite antibiotic for sinus infections. Dose important. 875 ampicillin 125 clavulonic acid works best for me. No interactions with afib drugs and have no diarrhea taking this twice daily. Effects with diverticulitis and dosage could certainly have different complications. Best etheral

No problems with it. No change to my now controlled Af H/R etc.

Best above straight amoxil antibiotics. Even a urine lab test when it tried to get best specific antibiotic to kill bugs was that. We call it another name.

The Clav combination assists with the ability to kill te bug. Just Amoxil didn't cut it.

Follow the instructions taking it.

This is one of the few antibiotics I tolerate. Ciprofloxacin provoked my afib and caused umpteen other problems . I have had a colectomy for diverticulitis with 26 cm of my colon removed. No more antibiotics ! Augmentin often does cause diarrhoea . This can be mitigated by taking a type of beneficial yeast S . boulardii

More that they are more proactive about the op here in France. The surgeon told me that what he removed was " rotten" and that I had been at great risk of having a bowel perforation though I had only had 2 serious attacks that needed antibiotics . In between I had had a lot of smaller attacks that subsided with liquid followed by low fibre diet for a few days. I had to avoid all sorts of seedy stuff as that seemed to set off episodes. Now I can eat what I like .

Did you have any other symptoms beside lower abdominal pain? That was the only thing I had.

The two bad attacks I had fever and felt unwell. The bkood tests showed sky high CRP and the inflammation was clear on the cat scan. Sometimes I had nausea. My case was complicated by very bad adhesions that had formed after a hysterectomy.

I didn't feel unwell or have any other symptoms apart from the pain which is now only when I cough or sneeze but it is 12 days since it began. GP didn't suggest blood test or scan just prescribed antibiotics for probable diverticulitis so it might not even be that.She also checked for inguinal hernias and talked about appendicitis until I told her that I no longer have an appendix!

Well here they are more thorough - or they were 10 years ago when I got my first attack. The health service has deteriorated here ( longer waits ) but is chalk and cheese compared to the NHS. In the UK they don't do colectomies till you have a perforation . Blood tests will show if you definitely have an infection as white blood cells and CPR will be elevated. But given the time it seems to take to get blood tests results in the UK they wouldn't be much use.

goodness I don’t know why you were prescribed antibiotics for diverticulitis anyway as normally the usual treatment for that is something like lansoprazole. Unless of course one of the pockets is infected, but again an endoscopy or colonoscopy would be the answer to that to get results

Anyway that is just our opinion as both my husband and I suffer hiatus hernia snd diverticulitis

I did think she would suggest some tests but perhaps that would be if pain continues. I don't feel it now unless I cough or sneeze. Is this a common symptom?

We are 81 and nearly 80 but apart from the awful indigestion pain and sometimes tricky tummy, my husband says he doesn’t get any specific pain through coughing or sneezing

Maybe the pain is through the strain of coughing????

You are both doing well!I will be 90 next month.

I don't have a cough just the occasional throat clearing which is when I still feel pain and when I sneeze. I had no other symptoms apart from lower abdominal pain.

I had a finger infection and was prescribed Co Amoxiclav, and was already taking Bisoprolol. On the second day of taking Amoxiclav I started to feel really sick my AF felt worse and I stopped taking it without consulting the Doctor. I felt better within 24hrs. For what its worth I got rid of my infection by applying Pure oil of Oregano all around my finger and nail where the infection started. Four days later the infection had completely gone! Oil of Oregano is very very potent and can burn the skin. The skin on my finger went very dry and was discoloured, it took a few days to return to normal. I would strongly discourage ingesting pure undiluted oregano oil as it could negatively affect your airways. All the best stormcloud!

I did a similar thing with tea tree oil which worked well but does burn the skin so care is needed when applying.

Oregano oil for oral use comes in capsules. I have taken it for a UTI rather than take antibiotics. However it should not be taken for longer than a week . It still damages the microbiome but does not give the side effects you can get with antibiotics.

Treatment with antibiotics is correct as infection is by definition the most common issue at home. In hospital there are other issues to be taken into account. If you have concerns do chat with your GP as only they your medical history.

Augmentin

Co-amoxiclav is a beta lactam antibiotic used for bacterial infections.

It contains amoxicillin (an antibiotic from the penicillin group of medicines) mixed with clavulanic acid. The clavulanic acid stops bacteria from breaking down amoxicillin, allowing the antibiotic to work better.

Amoxycillin and clavulanic acid are probably the safest of all antibiotics, I understand, assuming no allergy to penicillin.

Common problem with any antibiotic.. is they kill good bacteria as well as bad which then depletes the gut microbiome…which depletes your ability to glean nutrients especially magnesium…

If you have a major bacterial infection then you really cannot avoid antibiotic for the short term.

Keep a supply of magnesium taurate in case you experience AF due to this reason.

Always start taking probiotic foods after you finish any form of oral antibiotic therapy.. to rebuild gut flora.best wishes.

Yes that is the problem.I really don't want to take antibiotics if they are not necessary. I take magnesium citrate regularly. Thanks for advice regarding probiotics.

Olive leaf extract (used by Roman soldiers)

Allicin (garlic)

Black seed oil.

Coconut oil

Oregano oil

Parasitic infections

Wormwood

Externally

Tea tree oil

Clove oil

Coconut oil

Oregano oil.

All the above can slow down infections until you get some medical help… or act as prevention techniques..

But severe infections need big guns from the antibiotics supplied by pharmaceuticals
