Hi kkaza.

I had the same with a back tooth some months ago. I'm on an anticoagulant so they put the padding thing in. I didn't have any problems. Maybe it will take a few days to claim down. If not or it gets worse I recommend returning to see your dentist. Try using a salt rinse too.

What problems are you getting?

Is the wound in your gum still bleeding? If so bite down on it with something soft, like a rolled up bandage for as long as you can. If it's painful then perhaps take some paracetamol.

Wishing you well.

Have you been back to the dentist to check that you do not have a dry socket ?- that would cause a lot of pain.

~Certainly very common and most painful~ usually pack medicinal clove/s into socket from memory?

I had a very difficult extraction on the Tuesday before Christmas - large molar with curved roots like an oak tree which required cutting and drilling roots out. Like you, I was padded and stitched and the pain was severe for the first day - 30/500 co-codamol, thereafter 8/500 4 times daily. Dentist told me to take the painkillers regularly and not to wait for the pain to start.

I used an ice pack for 10 minutes 5 or 6 times a day to reduce swelling and help with pain which I assume was made worse by the amount of gymnastics needed to remove the roots.

After 3 days I started gently rinsing with salt water and I found that stopped the seeping from the wound and helped generally.

The worst for me was not being able to sleep for 4 nights and enduring a Christmas dinner of soup and scrambled eggs!

Sounds exactly like my experience.you should have seen the root but brute force managed it.It was just one huge bulbous root.struggling with sleeping and the swelling is horrendous.I take it the seeping is normal it was worrying me.I am using salt water .Don't have any ice but water from tap is ice coldI know what you mean about food. I have managed soft food but I worry about food in the wound and possible infection .We go away in 12 days for a month and hope stitches & packing will dissolve. No return appointment made.

The call was a cancellation after 3 month wait at Dental Hospital & I just tested negative that day .Sat there praying as I watched the test.

Every winter for the last 3 I have been waiting for Hospital cancellations so glad I got it out of the way.

Thanks so much for the help.

I think the amount of trauma is the cause of the pain and I too was concerned about bleeding as I've had molars out before without any problems. Again, the brute force element can cause seepage - biting down on a piece of gauze - painful but effective - stops it.

Rinsing very gently with salt water cleans the site and helps to prevent infection and a bag of frozen peas can be substituted for ice. I'm on my 11th day and the stitches are still there but will probably go in the next 2 or 3 days. All should be gone for you 12 days from now and tell yourself, as I do, glad to be rid of it!

I cheered when it came out.

True Ethel, two NHS dentists didn't want to touch it so I went to a private one I knew from before. Unco-operative root structure was my main problem - the same type of problem as kkatz, I think. Not my normal experience of tooth extraction - good riddance.

I finally got an new NHS dentist after 2 years or longer of my dentist only doing emergencies.I wore my big girl knickers 3 times expecting extraction and each time it never happened.

After x-rays they decided they couldn't do it because of root size, proximity to nerve & anticoagulants. So Leeds dental institute it was .Maybe 6-8 week waiting list!Turned out it was expected to be 15 weeks.

So I jumped at a cancellation praying that I would test neg for covid as I had a positive test 8 days before. What do I do if still positive? But ok.

I think it was probably last year student but very good.I told him how nervous and that I had never had any serious dental work without sedation .He said wouldn't be able to do that day if sedation and a longer list.So I thought if I can have an ablation under conscious sedation I can do this.

I would still rather have an ablation any day.

I suppose I am more worried I won't be able to get away for my winter trip to the Algarve.Hubby bowls there, competitions and league and the team is short of players.

Interesting kkatz - my experience is almost identical to yours - roots, proximity to nerve and Apixaban were quoted to me too by NHS dentists.

Take it easy, follow guidelines and you'll be fine - you still have plenty of healing time before your trip. See my post below which I couldn't enter as a reply for some reason.

gosh, that’s how I felt too. An ablation would be easier! 😳 And like you, I wanted to be well healed before an upcoming trip. My stitches disappeared after about 3 weeks I think. I found some gentle swishing with salt water helped clear the area of food bits. Fingers crossed it all settles down soon!

I've got the same coming along at some point, so your post and the responses are of special interest!

I hope the next few days bring the relief that you need. I'm fairly sure they will.

Mine earlier in the year was only sore fir a few days. Compared to the toothache, it was better than that 😁. A couple of handfuls of frozen sweetcorn (cheaper than peas 😁) in a plastic bag helped as did using pressure points. Google them. I'm usually cynical about that sort of thing but they did help. One is the webbed bit of skin between your thumb and forefinger. Gently pinch between your other thumb and forefinger and massage.Ideal painrelief would be Ibruprofen or Nurufen but sadly, not if you're on anticoagulants.

Keep up with the warm salt water rinses too.

Fingers crossed it will settle. My jaw ached as well, from all the tugging and pushing, which was part of the problem.

Additional concerns? I do feel as if my mouth smells.I suppose it is early days (not even 4 full days)I believe this could be normal . Could be it more prevalent because of padding?I tried brushing my teeth with duraphat 5000.This maybe a little strong and my gums all feel a little sore.Any recommendations?

I appreciate all the feedback and I am sure the post will help others.

Can you see into the socket or is there a clot under the stitches? Has the pain worsened? There should be a clot which helps to heal the socket and the pain should have eased some after 3 or 4 days. I felt as if my mouth smelled but it was the oozing of blood which dried and gave an awful taste. My gums and jaw are still slightly sore and my blackened jaw is fading slowly - takes time.

There is a very painful condition called dry socket which is caused by dislodgement of the clot protecting the socket, not common but it can happen in the first few days after extraction. Too much rinsing too early, using a straw to suck liquid and brushing too much near the wound can do this.

Can't see it as right at the back and still swollen in mouth.Hoping no dry socket as no evidence of clot dislodgement and don't think any bleeding really.Still early days so see how I go.I can ring them Tuesday if still a problem. Thanks again.

Hi

Same.

After 1st day of extracton warm rinse with dissolved salt to preventio of infection. 3 tmes day.

The first one right at upper back and before AF I went back and they out a nutmeg clove down the hole. Second infected so I had antibiotics.

Last left upper Dr gave me a 5 day course of anribiotics 5 days which I started day before.

These back upper teeth are close to sinusm Dentist wont do them but our hospital do them for $40.

Having AF I also delayed my anti-co.agulant from 10am until 1 pm.

Take paracetamol. 2 x 500g x 4 hrly + 8 per 24 hrs.

Prevention was better. than amozil later.

HAPY NEW 2024 from here now in 2024. The UK New Year Musical show was fab but the cloud cover interrupted it near the start which was aggravating. I watched the freeze.

cheers JOY. 74. (NZ)

hi. I’ve had two extractions on warfarin. The first one was absolutely fine. The second one appeared ok but the pain suddenly became very bad and I needed paracetamol every four hours. Contacted dentist and went in. Turned out the clot had been inadvertently disturbed and I had dry socket. He sorted it out and applied a clove mixture. Calmed down and healed fine. Don’t hesitate to go back. 😊

I had 2 big back teeth extracted separately by a fab dentist who did all the extractions in the practice, one had abscess still attached which he took pleasure in showing me. No problem with either. Then smaller premolar this year by a diff dentist, used to doing clearances. Stitched ( no idea why, other two were just packed with seaweed gel ( kaltostat or similar) Anyway latest one very sore for a while and whole mouth 'jangled'. I did hot saline mouthwashes, rang twice and told keep taking paracetamol. Then my own dentist saw me and said all good. The dissolvable suture didn’t dissolve so I went back and original lady whipped it out for me.It was such a different experience from how I remember the first two. Took a few weeks for mouth to be completely comfortable, but worth it.

I had all my top teeth extracted under sedation couple months back and had 'all on 6' implants, so on temp teeth at moment, I was due to have my 2nd ablation Oct 18th but had to set it back due to my loose teeth, anesthetist said my teeth were too much of a risk to go under

kkatz profile image
kkatz in reply toQuest4NSR

Wow 6 out.I take it all ok.Shame about the ablation and that AFib is not causing too many probs and you can get both sorted soon.

Quest4NSR profile image
Quest4NSR in reply tokkatz

It is 9 teeth out and then 6 implant posts and then they fit this thick darn denture on them lol, I bled so much, I was more nervous that having my 1st ablation

Haddie profile image
Haddie in reply toQuest4NSR

I’m having this done soon but I have four great teeth that I wanted to keep. Thinking about bridge and implants rather than all on six. Did you think about this or was it not an option. Just asking as trying to decide. Thanks, first time on.

Quest4NSR profile image
Quest4NSR in reply toHaddie

My upper teeth just had so much gum recession and my front six were all rocking side to side and back and forth, one or two were crazy loose and my back teeth were failing so for me it was all top teeth out and removable dentures and teeth in a glass or 'All on 6' / 'All on 4' and have a 2nd chance. I'm never one to spend money on myself throughout my life. Money in the bank doesn't give you happiness unless you can use it to improve your well being. I was going to do the cheap route with teeth in a glass but did 'All on x'. Some people would say, 'all that money on just teeth?', but if I spent it on a brand new car then people wouldn't batter an eyelid. Which ever you do it's all about sustainability. Wise dentist once said there is nothing better than your own teeth, just depends how many you have left. Comes down to the healthy / diseased ratio - for me it was a no brainer with 2 choices. Hope you make the right choice for you but comes down to the mouth foundation you have and dental bone

Haddie in reply toQuest4NSR

Thank you for the response. I only have four good one on top. Bottom teeth are good. Thanks again.

oh, ouch! I feel your pain. Similar experience about 4 weeks ago. Big back tooth, with very recalcitrant roots. And very awkward, since most of the the tooth was already gone due to root a root canal, a broken crown and a decay under the crown. Dentist said several times “wow, never has one this tricky before”! Not what I wanted to hear! 😂

I was off Apixaban for about 2 days ahead of time and still had a lot of bleeding. And my jaw hurt for a week or two. I did go back to the dentist after a few days just for a look at it. He said it looked great (looked awful to me!), kept taking Tylenol for a few more days. 4 weeks later, the pain is gone and it’s healed nicely. Hope yours settle down soon!

FOLLOW UP & PROGRESS.Had to return today.I Probably won't have returned but on a deadline for hols.

Just as well I did.The clot had become dislodged & lots of debris. They cleaned it out ,put some antiseptic gauze in it & sent me home with a syringe to wash out the socket .should be fun.

Keeping fingers crossed all goes well as go on hols on 11th.
