Metoprol and arrythmias

Thanks first for all the comments in the past. I have long taken Toprol (now Metoprol in the last few weeks), 16 years, before I was diagnosed with Afib recently. And I noticed, through the years, that, say, ten minutes after taking it, I felt a very brief irregularity that then went away. Do any of you believe that Metoprol (or any beta blocker for that matter) may cause brief arrythmias while it "settles" into your system. Thanks again.

I've been taking Metoprolol CR for a number of years, 47.5 mg twice daily. The CR means 'controlled release' I'm told, but I found by taking it in two doses that I tolerated the side effects better (drowsiness) . In my book not as controlled as necessary. I could fall asleep almost any time of day.

I have to say though that I've never known it act within 10 minutes of taking it like yourself. More like an hour or longer.

Are you taking the metoprolol tartrate., if so that is the quick release version the other is the slow release. I’ve taken the quick release and notice effect within 20 minutes I get a little hop sometimes and then it settles when I was taking 25mg. When I reduced dosage to 10mg twice a day I don’t notice that feeling. Also have you felt this over the entire 16 years you’ve been taking it or just recently?

Yes, I have noticed it over the 16 years. Not every time, of course, but occasionally. Also I take the extended release form. Succinate I think is what they call it.

I've taken it morning and evening for years, and always experience a slight "thud" when it begins working. It doesn't bring on AF or any other arrythmias.

Hi

Have a 24-hr Heart monitor.

On Metoprolol even 27. mg showed night pauses where as Bisoprolol or Diltiazen (CCB) didnt.

Also it made me breathless, fatigued and no energy.

If your H/Rate is high over 100 at rest you need to be controlled AF and pulse.

It was my solution. I should have had a CCB not a high dose BB after the stroke.

cheers JOY. 74 (NZ)

Hello, I take Flec 100mg 2x a day with 12.5mg Metoprolol.. about an hour after I can feel when it hits my system, my HR will increase for a few seconds then settle down.. I take my meds with food as I was having some horrible side effects on an empty stomach.

Thanks. How long have you been taking Flec? How effective is it?

ChadL in reply toPommerania78

Been on the Flec since Jan 2021. Had a pretty rough start with side effects but I've been doing okay with it now. I watch my diet, keep up with my Iron, hydration, electrolytes, don't take anything that could possibly trigger my arrhythmia...🥴

Has Flec. completely stopped the afib? If so, has your life returned to normal, especially as it relates to activities? What were some of the side effects at the beginning? Do you think Flec. is still effective for you? Thanks.

I have an SVT-supra ventricular tachycardia... my heart rate will just randomly crank up to high 100's.. the Flec and Metoprolol has been good at keeping it low .. as long as I don't eat or drink anything that will cause an arrhythmia..

What are the food triggers?

ChadL profile image
ChadL in reply toPommerania78

high carb and fats I find give me issues. also very spicy foods :-(... acid reflux can trigger an arrhythmia... i read up and became very familiar with the Vagus Nerve and how it plays a role in arrhythmias

Are you familiar with Joel Wallach's theory that the Vagus Nerve being "pinched" is the cause of Afib? What have YOU learned about the Vagus Nerve? Thanks.

ChadL profile image
ChadL in reply toPommerania78

I call the Vagus Nerve a nosy neighbor.. wandering through our body sending alerts to our brain and causing havoc! Anyhoo, I realized keeping it happy, keeps my SVT away.. low impact exercise, watching types of food i eat, keeping STRESS level low, hydration, sleep, meditation, yoga..

I'm going to read up on Joel Wallach, I have constant neck and back pain..

so don't think Flec will 100% cure my issue, I watch what I eat and drink constantly... side effects were pretty crazy in the beginning..(high heart rate, upset stomach, dizziness, flashing lights, anxiety) i now eat food before taking my Flec and Metoprolol and my side effects greatly reduced..

Interesting about eating with Flec. as I have several on this site say that they never eat just before and afte taking Flec. because otherwise it doesn't work as well.

I tried without food and the side effects were pretty drastic.. a slice of toast, apple or crackers has helped with the after effects..

Did you try losing weight as part of your treatment?

ChadL profile image
ChadL in reply toPommerania78

I have been trying to lose weight! I'm 57, with hormonal issues so the struggle is real.. However, I am sure losing weight will aid in my SVT.. 🫣

My primary DR was a huge help, she ran the blood work to find out what was going on and saw the depleted iron #s. I'm also on hormone replacement therapy, to address a high cortisol issue..which can trigger a high heart rate as well! she believes the constant high cortisol levels and the chronic low iron may have contributed to the SVT. It has been a rough two years getting sorted out but I take it day by day, keep my stress levels down, and i TRY to get more sleep 🫤

For activities I had to ease myself back into doing activities.. everything became such a problem! The Metoprolol keeps your heart rate low so i have to be careful with strenuous exercise..are you having side effects with the Flec and Metoprolol?

No side effects now. I have been on Flec. for a couple of months now.
