Hi I’ve been on Apixaban now for 8 months and have just had an awful sore throat cough virus, just getting better now but obviously run down as I have a few ulcers in my mouth now is it ok to use bonjela I know it’s aspirin based but you use such a tiny amount and it’s effective any thoughts? Thank you 😊

Well I hope it is as I’ve been using it for years but if unsure I suggest you consult your Pharmacist. I have to say that last time I was plagued by mouth ulcers the pharmacist gave me a liquid to paint on which actually was far more effective, sorry I don’t have it anymore and can’t remember the name.

Thank you so much for your help. The ulcers have now gone but Im still under the weather so havent felt like doing much. I am now on antibiotics. I ended up using the salt water option and that seemed to work. Thank you.

My dentist recommended using warm salt water (cheap ‘n cheerful) but there are a number of alternatives available. Agree with CD, best to ask your pharmacist.

ps I’ve just looked at the manufacturers leaflet and cannot see a reference to aspirin.

I use drugs.com to research circumstances like this and if it looks ok, then double-check with pharmacist. According to drugs.com, Choline salicylate (one of the active ingredients in Bonjela in Australia) has moderate interactions with Apixaban. "Using apixaban together with choline salicylate may increase the risk of bleeding. You may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring by your doctor to safely use both medications."

If you are also on a beta-blocker e.g. metoprolol, high doses of choline salicylate might also reduce its effectiveness.

It certainly pays to check/doublecheck anything new you are considering taking.

I was told that topical NSAIDs are likely to be fine as I had some prescribed for some scalp issues, but I would give the surgery a call, or your local pharmacist.

No problem with Bonjela but it's not brilliant. Ask your pharmacist about Difflam Oral rinse. There used to be something called adcortyl in orabase which really stayed put and worked quickly and had a local anaesthetic too but it's off the market now. There is an alternative but I can't remember the name; something like oragel. The chemist will know.

I've been taking 10 mg daily for over 2 years. The only side effects have been a couple of splinter hemorrhages on one of my toes. I do notice occasional bruising. No other health issues other than my PA. Only one serious PA episode since I was diagnosed in July of 2020. Sorry I can't be of more help. Also started taking the generic Apixiban about a year ago and didn't notice any difference. Take care..
