Edoxoban

I’ve been taking Edoxaban without any side effects for the past 3 years due to having permanent AF. It’s the only medication I take for my AF as most of the time I am not aware of having AF except slight breathlessness when I over exert myself and my rate is well controlled.

My question is has anyone had side effects from medication after taking it for a number of years? I was always under the impression that your body gets used to the medication over time! and that side effects occur at the start of taking medication! I recently started having side effects such as nausea and extreme fatigue which according to my Doctor are side effects of taking Edoxoban?Does anyone else experience Nausea etc while taking Edoxoban?

Hi Angusdon, I'm on EDOXABAN for 8months with no obvious side effects for occasional Afib and like you I'm not aware of my HR. Did the GP do any other checks to rule out any other causes of the symptoms? I might be tempted to go back and ask again why he/she is pointing to medication side effects after all this time. I might also record my BP for a few days before the appointment, do some resting HR measurement and perhaps do some HR readings after short cardiovascular exercise too. These might reassure you on the heart side if all okay, or provide some evidence for further checks with your GP not least to look for other explanations.

I have had this with many different medications after quite a long period of time. It has just happened with Felodipine. It is triggering AF and I have been on it for 25 years.

As for Edoxaban, the first tablet caused nausea. There is a filler (crospovidone) that I cannot tolerate, which is also in a lot of tablets. Teva uses it in all of their tablets. Over the years I had tolerated it but suddenly it caused nausea.

Personally, I think your doctor is right. Perhaps he could prescribe an alternative?

You can definitely start to have a different reaction to a medication after some time. The body is a dynamic system and, as they say, the only constant in life is change!

Im permanent AF and on Edoxaban amongst other meds. initially had some issues but not sure which medication the issues related to. My symptoms have settled down and apart from days when I’m feeling tired I seem to cope. My GP tests my blood every three months due to anticoagulant but not sure why.

After changing from Apixiban to Edoxaban I was okay for two months. I now seem to have a gurgling stomach after taking it. Waiting to see doctor to see if I can change back. Also taking flecanide 50mg twice daily for PAF.

I took Rivaroxaban for several months and then started with a severe rash which was caused by that particular anticoagulant. I changed to Apixaban (which you take twice daily) and have been on it now for nearly 3 years with no side effects. I don't understand why your Doctor did not change your anticoagulant if they think it is the Edoxaban which is causing the problem, surely that is the sensible thing to do? If it was me I would go back to the doctor and insist that you would like to try a different anticoagulant and see if that solves the problem. We are all different and react differently to drugs and no one knows who will suffer which side effects and when. Hope this helps.

Your doctor could be right, and he could also be absolutely off the mark.

Nausea and extreme fatigue can be associated with a number of things, other than Edoxoban. A trial, with a different anticoagulant would answer the question, but I would think at least a physical exam and some labs would be done first.
