I have been referred to Basildon Hospital for acceptance onto the waiting list for an ablation. So I thought I would give them a ring to see how long the waiting list is for the procedure.
There will be a pre op appointment (phone or face to face) which will be either just before Christmas, or early jan, then, all being well, it will get done within the next 4 to 6 months after that!
I am well impressed…. Thought it would be at least a year if not two…. Now I am excited as well as terrified 🤣

They certainly is a short waiting list! Basildon hospital is my local cardiac unit too for ablations, so it’s good to know, as I might opt for one in the future too.
When the time comes, please pop back on here and let us know how it went.
It will be upon you before you know it, but it is a fantastic opportunity to gain a bit of long term sinus rhythm, look forward to it and be positive, I wish you all the best.
I waited nearly 18 months for mine in Leicester. Finally had it done on September 19th. I was scared too, but glad it’s now been done. Just hoping it’s done the trick and my AFib stays away.🤞🤞🤞 Good luck for yours.
Good to hear. How long did it take you to recover? I look after my grandchildren while my daughter works, so am trying to judge how much ‘ time out’ I may need. 🥰
It’s difficult to say. I felt ok, after a couple of days, apart from lots of ectopic beats, which is to be expected. It’s 8 weeks since I had it done and my palpitations are much less now. They say it takes 3 months before you’re properly healed. I didn’t want to push it, so was very careful how much I did. I am still trying to get my fitness level back and am gradually increasing the exercise I do with my cardio and resistance training. Hope all goes well for you. No point in saying don’t be scared, because it’s human nature to be scared of the unknown. I found the information sheets you can upload from this site more helpful than any information sheets you got from the hospital.Hope all goes well for you.Cath.
Thank you. I found the video about ablation by Dr Gupta very interesting and helpful. I know it will be fine, I know I will be worried, all part of human nature as you say x
Logically I know there is no need to worry, thank you for the reassurance. Many years ago I had my eyes layered, stresses me off the planet so much that when asked my name I completely forgot I was married and gave my maiden name and my husband’s date of birth 🤣🤣🤣 x
🤣🤣🤣🤣 I hate going to the dentist, but i deal with it - needs must I guess. I think it’s possibly more the anxiety of waiting for a date ….. so iv will forget about it and focus on Christmas 😱 …. Actually, thinking about the ablation could be less fraught 🤣🤣🤣🤣. I am fine really. X
I'm in Maidstone and had to wait about 20 months from first deciding to have the ablation. Was scared stiff after reading all the bumph but was reassured by the nurses. Needn't have worried as on the day, the EP was also very reassuring and it was a piece of cake really. He said it had been successful and took me off my BP/antiarrhythmia med of Diltiazem 300mg and told me not to take the PIP 100mg Flecainide. He said he would reinstate my BP medication if required at 3-month follow-up. Unfortunately, I felt so well the next day I did too much and brought on an AF episode which lasted about 6 hrs until I had a cup of tea. I rang the hospital who reassured me this was normal but the EP said he was happy for me to restart the Diltiazem but to avoid the Flecainide unless absolutely necessary. This was in August this year and about 11 weeks in, I had another AF episode but I went back to sleep and it went on its own in less than 3 hours. Everything fine again since although I do experience a few missed beats occasionally. I would say I felt fine but tired easily to begin with but now I feel back to normal and am cleaning windows, sweeping leaves as well as usual housework. Had a 24hr Holter ECG monitor a couple of weeks ago and now have received my follow-up appointment in January. So your lead time is quite short it seems. Good luck with everything and let us know how you go on
Can’t they give you a rough idea of how long the waiting list is? I have also been waiting to see an orthopaedic consultant, taken over a year and I have gone from walking miles to hobbling on crutches in that time…. See him next week. Am relieved the ablation waiting time isn’t so long x
Seems not - was told originally would be around November but now can’t seem to get any update on when so clearly won’t be November since half-way through- frustrating but know I’m not the only one so just hanging on as best you can - unfortunately highly symptomatic and have an episode every 2-3 days and no meds to try to control as had a HA 2 years ago - On the heart side all good and no problems but AF a big problem for me so looking forward to get the ablation to see if it improves and gives back some needed QOL - Fingers crossed for us All 🙏☘️☘️
am sorry to hear this. I have been getting an episode about once a week, but with the build up to it a couple of days before and that it takes me a couple of days to recover, it is so debilitating. Plus the fibro makes me hyper sensitive to what is going on. Luckily I am retired and not working. Good luck with getting a date soon x
Thank you Tilly - Yeah it really can be debilitating and a struggle sometimes to keep things going, work, kids and doing the things that make life worthwhile - God that’s sounds like a right whine - not meant to be tbh - I get on with it and am pretty positive most of the time …but sometimes you do get a reminder of how life was before this damned thing took control of it so looking forward to getting it resolved or improved
‘They’ say paroxysmal af is more debilitating as we are in and out of it. I can’t sleep when am in it 🤷♀️🥰 but yes, just have to do our best and cope x
😱noooooooo- already did my Playtex Moonwalk marathon through London 8 years ago - reckon that is what triggered fibromyalgia for me 😪 (I hit ‘the wall’ in the middle of it- but finished it)
When I saw the lovely cardiologist who diagnosed af a couple of years later, he said definitely no marathons, no-one should do marathons. Exercise in moderation.
Mind you, I didn’t run it as it was a powerwalk one - very proud of ourselves and I have the heddle tucked away in a draw. Somewhere.
Will be happy to be able to walk a few miles along the seafront again,, briskly!
Great news Tilly. We’re all very different in the recovery time we need after ablation but one thing is certain - take whatever time you need. It’s week 6 since my ablation - spent 3 weeks doing little except resting, breathing, reading, meditating. Now feeling better than I’ve felt in ages, but still building strength very very slowly. You may want to train up those grandchildren to do some looking aftering!
Thank you, I can do that …. Reading, meditating, resting, breathing …. I will add sketching too. Nice and chilled. Grandchildren are pretty good. 8 yo grandaughter turns into a 50 yo nurse if someone is poorly - she is amazing! They are pretty good at helping already x
That’s lovely, hearing about your grandchild nurse 🥰
Funnily enough I had all my art materials to hand and a couple of Domestica courses at the ready, but in the end just played Dualingo, learning Greek and dreaming of Crete!
