Thank you everyone for your replies.
After my pre op this morning I have decided to go ahead with the cardioversion next Thursday.
I can’t say I won’t be anxious and wary but I think it will be for the best.

Good . If it works and you feel better in NSR then it might mean ablation would be the next step.
Personally, I think you have made the right decision. There are no guarantees in the world of AF but I was told that if it didn’t work, it probably wouldn’t make the AF any worse because they only stop and start the heart within a split second so there is no actual changes made to anything within the heart, hope that makes some sense.
The other important thing is that if you do nothing and in time there is a deterioration in your condition, you may go through life wondering what if!
If you are in the UK and your treatment is under the NHS, you can be fairly confident that they will not do anything to your ticker unless they are confident that they can improve your overall condition, but as I say, there are no guarantees so you are absolutely right to be cautious…..good luck on Thursday.
I’ve added a link to a British Heart Foundation webpage which will tell you everything you need to know about having a CV. It’s not scary and there is also a video which really is NOT scary either, promise!
I know it's not a nice thought but there's really nothing to it.It'll be done in no time and you'll be home before you know it, hopefully in normal rhythm. But, if not, you gave it a go.
Best of luck 🌸
All the best. I'd rather have one than have a tooth out. 😊
Dear Patchwork,
I had my cardioversion last Wednesday and although like you I was anxious I shouldn’t have been.
The procedure was carried out in the catheter department of my local hospital. Friendly and calm staff got me laid down and no sooner had they put an oxygen mask on my face when I awoke after ‘dreaming’ of a slight bump.
All done….atrial flutter gone…. happy boy
Best wishes
Cheering you on. I've had two CVs and they worked like a dream. Very easy procedure, by the way, and quick.
Hi Patchwork.
Nothing to it so don't panic. You'll be 'under' and won't even know it's happened. Nice cup of tea and a biscuit afterwards and you'll be on your way home.
Paul
So pleased to hear this Patchwork. If the cardio team feel this is right for you then that makes you very fortunate. The nurses will put you right at ease, and the procedure is simple and painless. Take it easy afterwards, and fingers crossed for NSR!
I had a cardioversion in April 2020 after having an afib episode in March. I was scared too, but after it was over I was worrying over nothing. Hopefully you will have someone with you during the procedure, so when you come around and the doctor/staff tells you stuff you will have an extra set of ears in the room. When I came around after mine, the doctor was no where to be found and I had several questions for him. My procedure worked and I was in NSR for 16 months, and then I went for open heart surgery for two valve repairs and continue to be in NSR. Will be four years come March 2024. You will be fine, and I wish you well with your procedure!
Its the most wonderful sensation when you wake up in NSR. all the best.
How did it go if you don’t mind me asking as my husband has an appointment for one next Friday. It frightens the life out of me thinking about the heart being stopped and restarted .
Thank you
I had a cardioversion following my ablation 2 weeks ago , the cardioversion just caused a bit of warm tingling in my arms and chest no problem . If you get to the stage of having constant persistent symptomatic AF and crawling around breathless and exhausted all the time with a feeling of someone kicking you in the back any treatment appeals .
My AF was back in 4 days following the ablation and after some discussion between the consultants I am down to have another cardioversion when a space becomes available 4/6 weeks I think . I won't think twice about it but wish it was sooner.
