AF the mystery

At the age of 51 I was diagnosed with lone parasymol AF. I have a tough first 5-years and 2 Ablations, only to be advised it had settled in a tricky part of the heart. As such, I managed with Flecanide as a PIP and episodes a few times a month.

Since August 2022 I’ve not had another episode?! What’s going on?

Hi Lou

When did you have your last ablation? Could the effects of that have taken a while to heal? Have you changed your diet at all? Artificial additives in food and drinks, especially sweeteners would always set my AF off. I make sure I avoid them now

Are there any major differences in your life ? Any new supplements added or perhaps less stress?

Whatever is helping I hope it continues to keep you AF free.

My ablations were quite close together but over 5- years ago now and I’m not relating it to those. The only thing possibly different is eating less red meat and because my cholesterol was 6.2. I’m not complaining and it’s wonderful, albeit I still fret about always having my Flecanide in my bag because I know it will pop up when least expected.

Less red meat is a common recommendation but I wouldn't eliminate it altogether.

Dunno Lou, AF is such a mongrel condition! I guess you are not complaining and that you will make the most of your current good fortune 👍

Absolutely but it’s just so weird.

Hi LouBrig,

Whatever you are doing, carry on doing it 😊. Perhaps the ablation you had, has worked after all. Best not to be complacent though, as you just never know with this affliction, but long may it continue for you.

The Ablation was 5-years previous and I am thinking it’s not that. X

Now that is a good news story.

oh I see 😳 I presumed it was fairly recently. It’s a strange thing Afib though, I was getting monthly episodes for a year before I went on Bisoprolol in 2021 after having AF ( mainly undiagnosed) for nearly 18 years now, since I was about 40. I only used to get very infrequent episodes for many years before ‘21.

I’ve only had two episodes since, once in 2022 (10 months after the previous) and 11 months later last month ( and I know what triggered both 🙄) it doesn’t always progress and get worse - well, it hasn’t seemed to with me. Mine is also ‘lone’- I’ve got no other comorbidities.

Whatever you are doing….just carry on and hope that it’s not coming back 🤞

Take care.

Never be complacent, keep up your new routines, look to improve them and maybe have a trusted private cardiologist/EP appointment once a year.
