sneezing

I recently had my meds changed from Edoxaban to Apixaban due to severe nose bleeds. I now find I sneeze a great deal and need to blow my nose constantly. Anyone else suffer from this or is it just coincidence?

hello Sue, I can’t help you much as I’ve been taking Apixaban since around 2016 and have never had a nose bleed. I’ve always been a sneezer but that’s because I’ve been plagued with hay fever for way more than 60 yrs (God that makes me feel so old!)

I know there is a tendency to think that anticoagulants can cause spontaneous nose bleeds but all the “experts” I’ve heard talk on the subject suggest that this is not the case. Nose bleeds are of course sometimes caused by antisocial behaviour 😉 which I appreciate is not the case here, but more commonly the delicate tissue inside the nostrils can rupture for a whole variety of different non anticoagulant related reasons. Of course, once the bleeding starts, the anticoagulants make it more difficult to stem. I’m not medically trained, but from what I have heard, the type of anticoagulant taken is irrelevant. If you Google nosebleeds there are a number of causes listed and as far as I can recall, in extreme cases tissue can be cauterised but if it continues to be a problem, maybe speak you your pharmacist……..

Thanks for your reply. I’ve been lucky in that I’ve never suffered from hay fever or similar. My heavy nose bleeds have stopped now 🤞🙏🤞since the change in meds but the sneezing has started???

Apixaban I’ve been told is the kindest anticoagulant of them all especially for the stomach and head. There is also a reversal drug for this one (I know as I had it when I had a bad fall on my head)

It could well be coincidence if you are sneezing a lot causing the nose bleeds

All the best

Nose bleeds first, then meds changed, then nose bleeds stopped and sneezing started. ENT man says not the meds. but it’s a weird coincidence??

I understand that Thomas, very often one can lead to the other and more importantly, severe sneezing can cause a subconjunctival haemorrhage (broken blood vessel in the eye) which is generally harmless but can be far more alarming than nosebleeds. Apparently, neither are caused by anticoagulants but are certainly exacerbated if taken.

Apologies for being pedantic but unless I have been mislead by NHS specialists in their field, Edoxaban (or any other anticoagulant) do not cause nosebleeds. Whether or not Apixaban can cause sneezing is anybody’s guess but personally, I would think it’s unlikely……

A friend who has sneezing bouts has nose bleeds, but in the end she had the weak vein (?) cauterised

I sneeze a lot, but did so before taking any anti-coagulant, I think some of us have more sensitive mucous membranes and the slightest thing can trigger a sneezing fit -if I have a tickle in my throat from say swallowing a pill, I will sneeze !!!!!!!
