Hi forum friends!

Do you have to declare AF as an illness or condition when renewing your driving licence ?

Thanks in advance.

You really need to check the DVLA website. It was a while ago since I went through the process which was ambiguous to say the least but I believe it has been simplified since, provided to do not experience dizziness or blackouts/fainting. What is equally important is notifying your insurance company which generally not an issue nor should it affect your premium…..

Answer the questions and eventually a form pops up which you need to complete and send to the DVLA. As mentioned, unless you experience serious symptoms such as dizziness or fainting, there are generally no problems in getting a renewal…..

Declare it to be on the safe side. Unless it specifically says AF doesn't need to be, unlikely.

Usually if these things are known and being successfully treated, there shouldn't be a problem.

I have a pacemaker for complete heart block, declared it a long time ago and now just have to confirm it when I re-apply.

It’s good to see this question from time to time as it reminds me to check the GOV/DVLA website to see if the information has changed. It hasn’t so I still follow the guidance on the following link.

Yes you must inform the DVLA I have done this and they send confirmation by letter to you stated that you can drive with no restrictions this then can be informed to your insurance company

You really know deep down if you are able to drive within yourself, however,I would suggest you notify the driving people if your in any doubts about your medical condition.

Yes, I had to tell them last October, they had my licence off me! GP won’t agree to me getting back due to dizzy spells and waiting for AV ablation!

Yes - should be no issue as nothing affects your dizziness. I declared mine and has a reply in days and it made no difference to my insurance premium. Neither did the pacemaker when I declared that

Hi, I’ve just completed the form (about 3 weeks ago) and sent it off to DVLA. AF is one of the medical conditions that needs to be done on paper not online. I think this is because you have to mention dizziness etc and provide details of your GO and Cardiologist so they can check if needed.

There is an email address you send the completed form to and you get a delivery confirmation email back.

I’m still waiting for them to get back to me.

I contacted my insurance company who have said that unless DVLA restrict my driving, they are not concerned and no added premium.

Hope this helps,

Nick

I think you do have to declare. I did and I've not had any repercussions . But lots of additional questions about my obstructive sleep apnea!Tim

OH goodness it took my son 3 years to get his provisional licence because he used to have sleep apnoea which has now gone since he lost a lot of weight. HIs consultant had discharged him two years earlier but he had to be referred back again just to get proof.

Hi

Not unless it affects you. I spoke to my consultant about this and he was 🙄

If you are having dizzy spells etc, yes.

But I wasn’t and don’t, so there is no need. You can ‘queer your pitch’ as they say, being honest eoll make them stop your licence! Then difficult to get back.

Yes, and to the insurance company otherwise they will use it as an excuse to worm out of any claims

Hi

I'm in NZ and about to renew my driver's licence before turning 75.

I have the form.

The only ? worried about is. ANY CONDITION NOT BEING TO DRIVE WITHIN 5 YEARS.

That could be Ischaemic stroke in Sept 2019. 4 years ago.

But I had a driving test to double check my ability to drive which test in December 2019. I got 10/10!.

AF is not a reason why you cannot drive.

You need an eye test.

Any traffic offences?

Yes you must inform the DVLA when you are diagnosed I have done this they send you a form you cannot drive fir a certain time and after that the doctor says you can drive as long as no dizziness fainting etc and the DVIa send confirmation by letter to you stating that you can drive with no restrictions you must also inform to your insurance company as soon as diagnosed

I never did as AF didn't cause dizzy spells. I did tell my insurance company. Unfortunately I haven't driven since I was diagnosed with foot drop, three years ago, following slipping downstairs due to one of my cats being sick half way downstairs. I didn't see it and slipped. If I could afford an automatic car I could have had a hand controlled accelerator and brake, but couldn't, so I walk more and use public transport.
