is it okay to just switch taking my daily Bisoprolol from morning to evening or should I discuss it with the doctor? I’m on a very low dose 1.25 and I don’t want to waste the doctors time, And should I skip the morning dose and resume in the evening?

I was recommended to switch mine to evening to counteract side effects. Makes no difference otherwise when you take if. Told to take morning dose as early as possible ,then evening at bed time. Thereafter at bedtime xx

We are not supposed to advise on changes to medication but over the many years I have been involved with this forum, many have claimed some benefits in taking their Bisoprolol in the evening rather than morning. Maybe see what your pharmacist has to say and keep your Doctor in reserve ……

Under doctors advice I gradually took my bisoprolol later each day until it hit the evening time of 2230. Or thereabouts. Works much better for me too! For eg

Monday 0700

Tuesday 1000

Wednesday 1300

Thurs 1600

Friday 1900

Saturday 2200

Sunday 2230

Remember to get doctors permission

I use to take it morning and night but I was so tired by 3pm so now I take it about 9pm the doctor was fine when I told him

I would think it's quite a versatile drug - the variation in the dosage range among people is quite high, also it's used as 'a pill in pocket' - I have it on an 'as needed ' basis from my cardiologist, but I mostly take it (1.25mg) every morning -it keeps my HR nice and steady in the mid sixties.

When I was first put on Bisoprolol the cardiologist said to take it in the morning ( as he was concentrating on writing his notes ). I asked if I could take them in the evening with my Warfarin, to save having to remember two sets of medication, and he said that was fine. By about 4 years later, I was on a much higher dose so the cardiologist said to split the dose into morning and evening. That didn’t take any ‘re-arranging’ of times, but Nick1957’s idea looks like a good one.

why not ring 111 if you’re not wanting to ‘waste’ a doctor appointment? FYI I take 2.5 am and 2.5 pm this was because 5ml together was giving me dizzy spells so I can’t see a problem taking pm. I would def get medical advice though.

Bisoprolol reaches a so-called "steady-state" after a few days so doing what you suggest seems to me unlikely even to be noticeable. 1.25mg isn't what I would describe as a low dose as it is a highly potent at that level.

1.25 is 1/4 of a pill. Isn’t that as low as you can take?

It's a single pill, too. Bisoprolol is available in four strengths, 1.25mg, 2.5mg, 5mg and 10mg. I've taken all of those at times prior to my ablation for atrial flutter. I've read here of people cutting even 1.25mg in half and getting a good response.

Some people seem to be too sensitive to beta-blockers or get difficult side effects and need calcium channel blockers or other drugs such as digoxin.

I take 1.25mg per day - here in South Africa the lowest dose is 2.5mg - silly heart-shaped pills (Cardicor) that although they are scored for splitting, they do not do so cleanly and do not fit in a pill splitter neatly - I told the young lady in the Chronic department of the Medical Aid Society I subscribe to, that she should give her boyfriend a packet for Valentine's day !

That's a lovely story! I wonder if she made his heart go “thumpety-thump"! I know my wife did mine when we first met in 1973 (and still does today!).

I’m on 10mg I thought 1.25 would be low

Ppiman profile image

I took that dose for a short time and I seem to remember reading back then that 20mg. was the maximum recommended dose. I suppose 1.25mg seems a low dose compared with that but its effect is still potent in some.

yes I read about 20 mg as I was in 15 I was thinking I haven’t got much here to work with but I get by on 10 although still breathless as times

I remember getting what I called bisoprolol chest ache when I was on the higher dose. It was a strange discomfort in the left chest - very disconcerting at the time. I still get it on occasion and wonder why.

When I was change from Atenolol to 5mg of Bisoprolol to be taken 2.5 morning and 2.5 at night. However I was like a Zombie, so reduced to 2.5 at night only, this has been reduced at my request to 1.25 at night (approved by my GP) my heart rated during one of my AF episodes was 34.....far too low.

Not a fan of Bisoprolol, it does bring your heart rate down but I don't like the side effects!

Are you willing to share your side effects?

Thanks for replying, I had a bit of brain fog, no energy and feeling lethargic.

That's me, I'm on 7.5mg per day, 2.5mg in the morning and 5mg at night. I feel vile, I have 4 horses and I can't be bothered to ride any of them. I've just started to develop slightly puffy ankles but not all the time and I feel constantly bloated. I'm going to try and get a GP appointment tomorrow.

Hi

I see no problem I take my 2.5mg at night away from CCB Calcium Channel Blocker.

I was on 10mg but introducing Diltiazem I got to reduce it.

So I would take a 1.5 as usual in the morning, then again at night but then dropping off the morning.

Hi,

My experience is slightly different, I suffered from vivid dreams when taking 1.25 Bisprolol in the evenings. When I mentioned this problem to my Cardio Nurse he suggested taking it in the morning. I switched over on the same day and the disturbing dreams went away😀

Of course each of us has varied reactions to drugs.

Good Luck
