Hi all, looking for others experience with Bisoprolol.I've been talking this medication for sometime, the GP prescribed 5mg twice a day, usually taken in the morning and evening.
However reading the medication leaflet is suggests any dosage should be taken once a day, therefore 10mg once a day.
So my question is, how do others take it?

my cardiologist has fiddled with my Bisoprolol a couple of times and it has always been twice daily but with different doses depending upon my heart rate when she checks me. The most recent time was in the summer and I took an increased dose in the morning 3.75 on cardios advice instead of 2.5 in the morning and 2.5 in the evening. This messed up my day with the higher morning dose and i reduced it back to 2.5 and 2.5 when i began to feel ill on the larger morning dose with the smaller eve. dose. I can see I am going to have a battle to get it back to what suits me .I suggest you be guided by how you feel. If the 10 you take now seems to work for you stick with it and 'fiddle not!'
Hi 10 gingercats, thanks for your response, looks like you have a more informative medical practitioner than I, in my experience, if you're still experiencing AF, 'keep increasing the dose'.
My AF nurse told me that Bisoprolol stays in the body for 24hrs so it's generally taken once a day. However, sometimes the dose can be split like yours is as 10mg is a hefty dose to take all at once. Do you know what your heart rate is on that dose?

Hello I take bisoprolol 10mg once a day in the morning I have only been diagnosed for 3 months also on digoxin for heart failure and furosemide can't get my heart rate below 93 at the moment so quite envious of yours!

When I was first diagnosed with AF in Jan 2010, the consultant who attended put me on Bisoprolol 5 mg to be taken in the morning. After a few months this managed to generate random, full flow nose bleeds. My GP then changed it to be taken at night ... no more nose bleed, no more problems. Stayed in this dose until 2022/23 when my GP decided that Nebivolol 5mg would be better and again to be taken at night. Finally, in April 2024 when my heart kicked off again I consulted a Cardiac Consultant of my own choosing and he switched me to Sotalol , 40mg in the morning and 40 mg at night.

One of the advantages of bisoprolol is its long half life, which makes it perfect for once daily dosing. It also soon reaches a “steady state” in the bloodstream meaning twice daily dosing shouldn’t have any point. But… it seems some do like twice daily.
10mg is a high dose and that might be why your GP split the dose. Individuals do seem to have different responses to the same dose of the drug.

How different we all are! The lowest dose of 1.25 mg was too much for me to take daily! It brought my heart rate down too low and does nothing for the irregularity that is part of our problem. Good luck

Admit I had been on 2.5mg twice daily, and struggled, with my BP going low if I was sitting for a while, for if I got up too quick, my legs would go wobbly and overall a little light headed. 2 separate occasions I lost consciousness when jumping out of bed too quick. So dropped dose in half, and feel back to normal....although carry tablets with me, just incase I need to take an extra one.
Hi bobby, thanks for your reply, seems medication for AF has different effects on different people.
My cardiologist told me to split the dose once he had increased it to 10 mgs, but I had already been taking it twice daily even on a lower dose. He said that was fine. I feel it spreads it out a bit rather than taking a whopping dose all at once. Bisoprolol is given for slowing the HR and for lowering blood pressure, so maybe it depends on the reason for taking it.

I take mine split between morning and evening was told to by cardiologist I take 5mg morning and 2.5 mg evening was originally 5and 5 but now I only take extra 2.5 if in afib as agreed with cardiologist

I've always been advised to take it once a day, and I take it in the evening with dinner, as it tends to make me a bit short of breath on exercise. My dose was 10mg for several years until I persuaded a new cardiologist to slowly reduce it, which helped somewhat the shortness of breath (though still not perfect). I'm on 5mg now once a day. HR usually in the 50s.
If your dosage suits you, I imagine there'd be no need to change what you're doing.

I started on 5 , then was increased to 7.5 and now take 10mg daily. I was told to take it at 8am . Warfarin at 5pm. I hope that helps.

When I was on Bisoprolol I was told to take 1 x 10 mg a day in the morning as it could make HR too slow at night. Maybe that’s why you’ve been advised 2 x 5.

I am in permanent AF. My bisoprol dose is 1.25 taken first thing is enough to give me a resting heart rate 60-80. Exercising is where my HR goes out of control.

Hi there,I've had it for 11 years now.
I had 3 cardioversions back then with no luck.
Decided against anything else, at that time, as my symptoms were minimal.
It sounds to me like some people must be on a too higher dose of bisoprol for just HR control. I accept there may be other reasons.

I've taken mine, now 7.5mg but was 10mg for many years last thing at night so the side effects aren't too bad

I have been taking 5 mg twice a day for years seems to suit me as bp and pulse 60 - 70 are fine tho a little lower late evening when in my chair after supper. I still xercise on treadmill 2 x 20 mins p week not breathless tho not going v fast. When xercising in af pulse for anyone is all over the place but below 125 ish for me. Feel fine on it. Am 81. Mike

I take 2.5mg morning and evening. My cardiologist is happy for me to take it twice a day. But he also says that 5mg once a day would be fine. So there seems to be some flexibility to have it once or twice daily.
