Low platelets

I have just had my blood results and my platelets are low at 116 (normal 140 -400). My GP doesn't seem to be over concerned and asked for the count to be rechecked in a month's time. I am on apixaban 5mg twice daily and also Famotidine. My GP has said that apixaban can cause low platelets and I also found out that Famotidine can also. I am told to carry on both drugs and just have the recheck. I am now filled with anxiety, Has anyone else had this dilemma?

I understand low platelets increase bleeding risk

I have had low platelets (121) for years I was referred to a specialist quite a few years ago and his conclusion was that it is caused by Apixiban and it was of no real consequence and he was proved right over the7 years of taking Apixiban I have experienced no issues what so ever. My advice would be stop worrying. Regards Roy

I understand your worries but ask yourself, do you feel unwell?, Are the low platels causing you any difficulties? I think if the answer to both questions is no then perhaps your worrying is energy and emotions wasted. Roy

My platelets are also below range but docs aren’t bothered about it.

Yes bloods done in March also showed lower platelets at 117. My cardio didn’t seem fussed and my GP just suggested another FBC later this month.

Same situation as me. Beginning to think it's the anticoagulants, worries me though as low platelets increase bleeding risk and top that with anticoagulant it's scary. I will try not to worry so much. Thank you

I have had low platelets for years, probably caused by Edoxaban. Although I was referred to Haemotology and get checked every year I have had no problems.

I had this, but unrelated to apixaban. It was to do with an infection. Resolved by itself and checked after a month.

Thanks Wilsond. I don't think I have an infection but you never know

I wasn't aware either and felt well. My brother ( Scientist) explained that we often fight minor infections unconsciously, only noticing when our systems start to get overwhelmed. So may well be lurking in the background.
