Losing weight can be the single most important intervention both for afib prevention and/or a successful ablation. Six months should be plenty of time if you are motivated. It may even turn out that losing weight is all you need and the ablation can be cancelled. Some doctors soft peddle this because they are cynical that their patients will really lose the weight. Others, won't even do an ablation if you're over a certain BMI. If you're motivated and can lose weight in a healthy way, make this your priority.

thank you I have taken on board your advice and started a change in my life style hopefully will loose weight
The covid experience, where, from what I read, most people who suffered badly with it were overweight, seems to have taught doctors something important: that being overweight isn't simply about appearance, it can also change the body in lots of important ways, seemingly to increase the level of inflammation within the system. This might be why being overweight is so bad for people with heart issues and especially AF? Other things people with AF are told to try to get under control are sleep apnoea, diabetes and blood pressure - and to have their thyroid function checked.
