Dry skin? Dermol cream (not lotion)

I've tried all these and also read the Questions and answers from two years ago but nothing seems to have a cure eurax cream works but when the itch moves about your body so quickly its a problem and one is still kept awake most of the night. Today my granddaughter smothered me in moisturiser and I've had some relief. I've had a thyroid blood test and that's ok so I'm going to ask if my kidneys need testing. I don't know if it's possible but would do nearly anything to get the itch to stop. Thank you for answering my plea. Terry

Hi

What about PINETARSAL. Given a script by Dr.

Dilute with water and put on in the shower.

I recently saw my GP about itching all over. She asked for blood tests as I have nothing to see on my skin. I hope to get the results next week. I sympathise!

Hi Terjo sorry to hear about your itch which can drive anyone a bit mad at times. Have you ever been checked for PBC Primary Biliary Cholangitis. Your GP can test you, one of the most debilitating symptoms is itch. There are very effective treatments for it…

Messy but some people find liquidised cucumber good. Any creams that seem to help, keep them in the fridge( I know, this time of year not very tempting!)If you persuade doc to check kidney maybe he'll do liver tests at same time?

I would get that checked out as seems to be more than just occasional. I sometimes get extreme itching between my toes from an Athletes Foot type issue. What works well for that is a product called 'Witch Doctor Gel' - liquid extract of Witch Hazel.

Hi

I use DAKTARIN from Athletics foot. Wadding in sea helps. Always dry.

Wash socks every day with mild soap, cotton and no non breathing walking shoes. Sandals best.

Watch other showers. Stand on small towel. Wash and dry in sun.

Hi

Are you on Nitrofuratoin? My mother had a itch with it.

Used as a prevention the speciast said use for 4 months then change or stop. It can cause lung problems.

Itch. the bee sting ointment is good as is Q-tol or a steroid.

One Covid booster was put into nerve and gave me a large red spot of itchy

reaction.

The Dr gave me an antibiotic called Doxycycline.

You need to have a full range of blood tests for starters.

I use cetirizine hydrochloride. You can buy it online. I used to get it at superdrug but not sure if they still sell it. This usually stops the itching for several days and I always sleep well that first night. I take half a 15 mg pill in the evening when the itching is driving me mad. Sometimes I can go for several weeks without the need for another dose. My problem is hives set off by the flu jab years ago and I can itch anywhere in the body once it starts.

Where are you itching? Some anti-depressant / anxiety medications can be a cause of arms itching and elsewhere, as can ageing skin changes such as keratosis, mostly on the back. Other itching can be from dry skin, eczema, psoriasis, liver enzyme issues and haemorrhoids.

One cream that has worked extremely well for me was recommended years ago by an elderly relative who said it had uniquely made her life once again bearable. It really can be that good. It's based on a very safe chemical chemical called crotamiton, and is generally available as Eurax cream.

Thank you Steve I use eurax but the extent of the itching is so encompassing that I really need something that works more widely. Terry

Hi Terry - You have my sympathies. Has your GP no solution? If its general, all-over itching, then a bath with an emollient cream helps children so might help.

When I used to get a kind of eczema on my instep, the only thing that relieved it was a mild steroid cream (but not the over-the-counter hydrocortisone ones, which I find useless). I think it was Betnovate, but a diluted version.

When I had Chicken Pox the itching drove me mad. The best thing that eased it was taking a bath with Epsom Salts in the water.

you could try the Aveno blue label. Calendula cream is also very good

Some years ago, my GP prescribed Loratadine 10mg tablets (I believe they're now available over the counter) for frequent itching which was a side effect of medication. Within a few hours the itching decreased and the next day had completely gone. I took two tablets for one day followed by one tablet daily for 4 days as suggested by the doc. Since then, if itching flares up, I take just one tablet at night with a glass of water for one or two nights and again, the itching disappears and fortunately rarely returns. GP has advised this mode of action for me - it works well, but of course, we're all different and medication compatabilities must be considered. Hope you sort your problem soon, the itching at night is horrible.

Itching all over can be an allergic reaction to something you are taking and several medical conditions can also cause widespread itching. See your doctor. When I was given oramorph years ago in hospital, I happened to ask the ward sister whether they starched the sheets because I was itching all over. Within 5 minutes there was a doctor by my bed and the oramorph was stopped immediately.

You need to be thoroughly checked out to make sure there are no underlying conditions especially kidney and liver function tests. Also thyroid. If nothing found you could try Quercetin supplements as an alternative to antihistamines. I used to suffer from hives and itchy legs and feet in the winter. Antihistamines would help but I did not wish to take them regularly as they made me very drowsy even at very low doses. I take a small dose of Quercetin 3 times a week and this works well.

Try a bath with oats in the water. Supposed to soothe irritated skin.

I was prescribed 10mg/daily of certirizine hydrochloride to counter the side-effects of Rivaroxaban. It is effective.

Before my ablation I was on the blood thinner Xarelto and another drug. I had a terribly itchy rash just confined to my lower back. When I stopped taking Xarelto no more rash. I had started another drug same time as the Xarelto and for some reason thought that was the culprit but it wasn't. So drugs can definitely cause itching.

My Dear Terjo,

The last time I wrote on this subject was some 40 years ago and it was to enlighten a DOCTOR who wrote a medical column for the Toronto Star newspaper. The column was all about ITCHING and how it was driving "5,000,000 Americans insane" [he didn't say anything about Canadians] and since the Yanks represent 5% of the World's population that extrapolates into 100,000,000 around the World are scratching and rubbing a lot. So it is of no comfort but you and Gramps are not alone.

On reading the good doctors column I immediately recognized the symptoms of what had plagued myself and my darling wife a few short months before. And we followed the same procedure as most people do, ie, go to our SEPARATE DOCTORS who, in turn, wrote out different prescriptions that were filled by different PHARMACISTS. None of which worked, some of them smelling and causing us to smell as though we had just taken a bath in fresh asphalt --- in fact one of the prescriptions was what we had to do: drop it in the filling bathtub and then soak ourselves in it. AND NOTHING WORKED!

To make a short story long a few months before [1983] I had developed an itchy scalp and a DOCTOR had prescribed two treatments: Betaderm and shampoo with Selsun Blue it took a few days and a few shampoos but Voila' they finally worked! WHAT DOES THAT HAVE TO DO WITH YOU AND HUBBY'S ITCHY BODIES? Well, read on:

As noted above Cata and I had contracted this horrible itch practically ALL OVER our bodies the exception being our faces and necks and that place we dare not talk about.

After several DOCTORS and PHARMACISTS and useless remedies, I was showering and decided to experiment with the leftover SelsunBlu. While still WET I rubbed the SELSUNBLU all over my body --- with above-noted exceptions --- got out of the shower still wet and covered with SelsunBlu [not very much really, a teaspoonful?] and set about SHAVING. By the end of the shave, the Wet and SelsunBlu had dried and caked on my body. I stepped back into the shower and rinsed myself off. AND I FELT RELIEF FROM THE ITCHING THAT LASTED FOR OVER TWO HOURS. Once I was CERTAIN I had found at least a temporary miracle I told Caterina who needed no encouragement to seek even temporary relief. And EVERY TIME THE ITCH RETURNED WE WOULD HOP IN THE SHOWER NOW TOGETHER---and My God Caterina was beautiful, and I'm no slouch either --- . FOR 10 DAYS WE KEPT IT UP AND EACH DAY THE RELIEF LENGTHENED TILL FINALLY IT WAS GONE.....

The illness would return ever decreasing as we continued to attack it with SelsunBlu. It stopped attacking Cata sooner than I which kept attacking at virtually the same spot on RIGHT THIGH and, incredibly, almost the same time of night - 2.30 am +/-. On one occasion, October 22, 2002, I, now having great confidence videotaped it starting on my right thigh then my encircling it with SelsunBlu and watching it recede. Those attacks continued but lessening for +/- 30 years. We haven't seen it for some years now. An ADDON: A couple of months ago my Grandson was over and I noticed him scratching his RIGHT THIGH! I thought 'Oh No' he's inherited....but instead, I asked him "Jesse, What's with the scratching?". He answered, "OH, this damn thing has been driving me up the wall itching.". I headed straight for the bathroom and Selsun Blu [I'm NEVER without it.] handed it to Jesse, instructed him, and 2 days later I get an Email

"Granpa this stuff is a miracle."

As I noted to begin this I passed this on to the Toronto Star's medical columnist. He did have the courtesy to mail me back [still have it] thanking me for the information and pointing out that he had, in his column mentioned "selenium" as one of the minerals etc that experiments were being carried out with. HOWEVER.......

It wasn't till many many years later that I noticed that printed on the back of every SelsunBlu 2.5% bottle is my prescription almost to the exact number of days . As noted I had emphasized 10 days of Application when I wrote the Toronto Star; 10 days being a 'thing' with me. SelsuBlu settled for 7 DAYS probably after TRIALS. Now did the TORONTO STAR contact SelsunBlu with the remedy? Or was it the DOCTOR who wrote the column.? Or was ......No matter what 100,000,000 itchy people over 40 years is a lot of 'scratch' and I never got any of it....I think I'll drop the Toronto Star a line....

On the back of the SelsunBlu they have given a name to it 'Tinea versicolor

I hope this helps you Terjo but look at the bright side at 90 years old you're lucky to be

STILL SCRATCHING

Terjo my dear, your itching can't be too bad, certainly not anywhere near what my wife and I went through those many years ago. If it was you would crawl over broken glass to get to what I suggested from that now ancient experience. And, by the way, it did give us immediate relief that lasted in ever-increasing increments until 10 days later it, the ITCHING was gone, gone, gone.

I developed severe body itch a few days after my ablation almost 4 weeks ago. No rash but it’s crazy-making. Wondered if it was from the huge bandage with latex in it I wore for 5 days around my midsection to control bleeding at the groin site. Switched from Xarelto to Eliquis with no relief. Going for extensive tests in a few days. Zyrtec and low dose Neurontin are helping a little bit not enough. Has anyone experienced post ablation itch or is af driving me mad?!

Thankyou for your comments.I know I am allergic to some things but can't think of anything new that I have taken. I find eurax ointment very helpful but impossible to ever the whole area of itching. Thank all of you who have answered my plea but my age doesn't matter I'm still mobile and look after my husband who is nearly 96, he has osteoporosis . Terry
