useful video from ‘my hero’ on atrial fibrillation and the different treatment methods used and when (including surgery)

an interview with steven hunter, cardio thoracic surgeon .

I am now 8 months post surgery and still in NSR, hoping to follow in the shoes of the other once persistent mr Hunter patients on here who have been afib free for a long time.

I wanted to share for those in persistent who don’t want to manage with drugs.

If you are NHS England your GP/EP can make a referral to Mr Hunter.

There are other surgeons in England but I chose Mr Hunter on the basis of his experience in doing 5000 heart surgeries and many hundreds of afib keyhole

Hi, what are the risks of this type of surgery x

MummyLuv profile image
MummyLuv in reply toKevinder23

hi Kevinder, the % risk of open heart afib surgery are about double that of a catheter ablation but now the surgery is done by keyhole it’s about the same. I can send you a link with more information if helpful. There are studies on surgical ablation which detail the specific risks.

Very interesting. Thanks for posting. ‘Your hero’ comes across as a very nice man.

very humble! I am chatting with a few folk on here who are pursuing this option and like Carole shares (4chickens) after an initial private consultation he has offered to accept a GP referral for them to have the procedure done on the NHS (as they are in NHS England). He is not driven by money, he is driven by helping people. 💕

Very interesting, I'm having OHS next week for AVR, LAA, PVI (AF/AtypicalAFlutter) and possible aorta replacement/reduction aortoplasty. Nice explanation of LAA, thank you.

Thank you! Very interesting . He comes across as a very approachable doctor, one you feel you could have a full and frank discussion with.

indeed! Very honest, and took the time with me to explain things, the night before my surgery he spent two hours with my husband and I discussing all the research I’d read and bringing it to life with his experience.

Well he certainly sounds like a very genuine, good man. You did very well to find him.

great video, hopefully I won’t have much longer to wait, it’s been a long 8 months. dr Sahu couldn’t do today and Mr Hunter can’t do the 19/1 so sometime after that but down to 1 theatre at Sheffield instead of 2. Glad your doing so well. X

Thanks for posting this! He seems very knowledgeable and easy to work with. You did good!!!! I’m so glad there is this option in the UK. You have been instrumental in getting the word out ❤️

me too Marsha, I admire Dr Wolf’s marketing as his webinars and educational videos are what led me to surgical ablation in the first place. I am about to do a patient video for Mr Hunter. The more we can get into circulation in the UK the more people can consider if this is an option for them. 🤞🤞

Poochmom in reply toMummyLuv

I’m so glad you will participate in a video. It will really help people to hear your story just as Dr Wolf pointed you to these surgical ablations. From the day I had my consult with Dr Wolf, all my anxiety left as I knew AFib was short lived. I want this for all my friends in the UK!!!

Funny note though, AF episode just HAD to rear its ugly head the day before I left for Houston and after I converted with Flec I just said “ off with your head”! 😜 Last episode I had was June 22, 2022. I was having episodes every 5 days. So thankful!!!

He comes across very well. Apologies if you’ve answered this question before on a previous post but how long were you in persistent AF prior to having surgery?

it’s great to hear dialogue with an expert like this MummyLuv, you actually get to understand the science through the natural way he explains things, you made a great choice…. Although I’ve been in NSR for 8 months post ablation, I do have some issues with recovery from exercise and with breathing, but it’s so hard to get my cardiologist to discuss this, it feels like he just wants to stick with the clinical stuff and has little to do with patients post ablation issues, even private ones……

MummyLuv profile image
MummyLuv in reply toKeano99

I am so glad you are still in NSR, sorry your consultant is not supporting now though, I can imagine that’s very very frustrating!!

Thanks for the excellent video, MummyLuv

Dr Hunter is a very professional, knowledgeable physician. Respect the way he addresses the treatment for afib without criticism or belittling other treatment methods.

If you contact him, ask him to make more videos. Would like to hear discussion on how other heart conditions like valve irregularities contribute to afib and how afib can cause those irregularities.

MummyLuv profile image
MummyLuv in reply tomav7

hi Mav, his colleague does loads of videos on valve conditions. Mr Birdi was voted the top cardiac surgeon in the uK in Top Doctors. Mr Birdi observed my procedure, lovely man, very humble like Mr Hunter

Thank you for sharing this video. I think it very important for people new to AF to know what the possibilities are for them over time.

He looks a nice person, has kind eyes. I always think I'm a good judge of character just by looking at someone.

Looking at him, sadly I'd now say a gullible idiot. Used to love his fun character, perhaps he'll come back to us one day, but who would trust him now?
