welp in the ER again

hi all - so for the past like month or so I’d say, I’ve been waking up out of my sleep in a panic with my heart absolutely racing. Normally I can take my beta blocker and get it back down to normal but tonight I couldn’t. It really felt like svt again but it wasn’t high enough to be deemed that, it was 140 bpm. So I went to the hospital and I’m here now, and they said it is sinus tachycardia. But im so incredibly worried this is going to continue happening and I won’t be able to get my heart rate down. Idk what’s going on or why this is happening. Not sure what to do as all my cardiologists say my heart is “normal”

If you are not sure what the doctors mean then ask for an explanation. I suspect they mean your heart has a normal rhythm, it’s just a running a bit fast. Your anxiety will be super boosting your heart rate so hopefully someone has shown you some slow breath exercises to help you self regulate? Long breath in through the nose and much longer slow breath out - the breath out to be longer than breath in. Practise every day and ensure you breath through your nose - NOT your mouth. If you are a mouth breather - then get help to assist you to breath through your nose. Buyteko method teaches excellent breath control.

Have you been tested for sleep apnea? If not ask as that is a common cause of high heart rates at night and it was always an AF trigger for me.

It may feel horrible but a rate of 140 is not going to be considered life threatening and hopefully, staying calm and good breathing well will help.

Hope you feel better soon.

thanks for your reply CDreamer, I have been taught the breathing exercises, unfortunately when I feel like this it feels like my heart beat is caught in a loop and won’t break without outside intervention which of course in turn makes my anxiety worse. It seems during these episodes no amount of breathing slows my heart rate :( very scary

And the fear is exacerbating what is happening to you so please get help for anxiety management and a sleep apnea test which could be the underlying cause.

The other thing that I have helped people with to break this panic/high HR cycle is EFT or Tapping - it may sound off the wall but I can assure you that it will help break the panic cycle. Lots on YouTube I quite like this one as it provides a script. youtu.be/7NqJ_0Dbd28

I helped someone in the middle of panic 2 days ago and within 5 mins they were calm and HR down. It doesn’t always work for everyone and although I am EFT trained and certified I don’t normally practice but it’s a skill to be learned and shared which can help many with anxiety and because it’s self administered and you can learn from a video you won’t need outside intervention - unless you want reassurance and reliance on others making it ok for you? Nothing wrong in that, just recognise that is maybe what you need - someone to reassure you.
