Thanks to all of you who have written such thoughtful replies to my posts about the impending bypass. I’ve read and greatly appreciated all of them. I still haven’t had any date for the procedure, but it is probably going to be next week. Apparently, delirium is common afterwards; if anyone has experienced it or knows anything about it I would be very interested. Also, if you get any rude or odd posts (or at least posts which are ruder or odder than usual) from me next week that will probably be the delirium!

I remember being delirious when a child. It was crazy for me but funny to my brother's.

The closest I came to delirium following my open heart surgery was feeling somebody was standing behind me and occasionally stroking my back, but someone else in the high dependency unit thought he was in a space ship. It must have been all the beeping and flashing lights. Obviously two extremes of oddness but not to worry, you can’t do anything about it and it wears off. Good luck with your op whenever it happens.

Thanks. How long did it take to wear off and did you have any long term after-effects?

It was literally a couple of days and there were no after effects at all except that I can still remember it happening. It was very odd.

Was your ability to do things like make phone calls , read etc. affected?

After the surgery you are so dosed up with painkillers and your body is busy trying to get rid of the anaesthetic you really can’t do very much. I seem to remember I didn’t have my phone with me for a few days. Yes I could read but not for long. Take something fairly light readingwise, it’s difficult to concentrate and retain a plot. I had a sudoku book with me but started with the very simple ones and still messed up. The days do seem to go fairly quickly, you spend a lot of time asleep even though they do insist on sitting you out of bed from the morning after your surgery.

Thanks for this information. One final question: did you find your memory or reasoning abilities affected in the longer term?

Not at all. Don’t worry, you’ll be fine.
