Your a braver man than I. I have been wanting to do that for over 3 years now but I cannot bear the AF that follows. Enjoy your night Kenny 🥳

That’s the way that I feel now. When we go out to our favorite Mexican restaurant I loved having my glass of sangria but now I know two sips is all it takes to make me feel horrible. As I just said to Kenny if it doesn’t bother you and you can handle how it makes you feel then go for it. He didn’t mention if it triggers him or not. As I find my triggers I try to avoid them I’m so tired of feeling lousy

I can drink beer without it bringing on Afib. Who reading this post have Afib episodes after beer?

I would be curious to know as Sanjay Gupta from York cardiology says that beer does not usually bring on Afib.

I find that lager brings it straight on. The only thing I can drink very moderately is rose wine

I am half German and love the beer so I guess if I was in permanent AF I would be there too......but not until!

Hi Kenny.

Enjoy Munich and beer. Munich is a lovely place to visit - went there before my afib days and took full advantage of the beer cellars!

There's one bar in the centre (a couple actually) where Hitler started to meet supporters of his ideas before his rise to power. You'll find it easily enough and it is now a nice bar despite its history.

Beer or wine in moderation doesn't seem to affect me. I had a work do last weekend, 9 weeks post Ablation. Had 4 beers over a period of 4 hours and no AFib. It was my first real test of cosuming alcohol post ablation. Prior to my ablation wife and I enjoy a couple of glasses of wine or beer couple nights a week, with no AF.

The occasional beer doesn’t affect me - a lit bit of what you fancy does you good. Enjoy.

I’m another one who was fine on a couple of beers but if I had a big night, then Flutter would start the following morning (maybe 8 hrs after last drink). As my other trigger was excercise, again with delayed symptoms, I now wonder if it was actually dehydration that was the primary trigger being brought on by either of the two activities.

After 2nd Ablation, I no longer get AFlutter but now have AF. Very different: last few events have both occurred during exercise. I still have no problem with a few (even a rare 3-4) beers and interestingly, had no problem if I had a lot (though this is now a very rare event). However, days of binge drinking will now be few and far between and will be stopped if they prove to be a trigger and episodes are increasing. QOL is a find balance and very individual.

Cheers Kenny, wine in moderation doesn’t affect me. In my younger days in excess I used to get a bumpy heart (never heard of AF) unsure if it was the booze or dehydration.

I think we all give in and have the occasional treat. With me it's a jam doughnut, shortbread biscuits, or a small bar of chocolate. I could go on, but don't want to be a bad influence. I've lost a stone in weight recently through illness, so think it's ok to treat myself now.

Have fun.

Go for it Jean. We like to bake cakes in our house. I've just made lemon drizzle cake with a crunchy topping. I gave up alcohol years ago but am still intending to have small portions of the Christmas cake we have made, even though it's being fed with whisky. ☺️ And Kenny have a great time.👍

I have a couple of squares of dark chocolate most evenings. My favourite at the moment is Lindt salted caramel. I have to be careful as too much causes insomnia - it must be the caffeine. I usually have a pudding if we eat out and there is something I like. I am fussy about puddings as I don't like quite a few of the standard ones here. From time to time I will make a cake and at the moment we have a good stock of figs poached in honey and Amaretto in the freezer as the drought and heat waves gave us a bumper crop this year. They are lovely with ice cream. I'm so glad you have recovered well from your run in with Covid. It shows that you must be pretty robust!

Our neighbour in Spain gave me figs this year and I poached them in honey and red wine (for the first time), they were absolutely delicious!

This has been one of the best years ever for our fig tree. We ate them straight off the tree for over a month every day , gave them away to friends , made jam and poached them . Some years we get hardly any. I'll try them with red wine as well next year. Did you use a sweeter wine?

irene75359 profile image
irene75359 in reply to Auriculaire

No - I am definitely not a cook, no imagination, but my friend said drizzle them in honey and add enough wine to almost cover the figs. Bog-standard very cheap wine from the supermarket. If I had to do it again I would use less honey - the figs were so sweet on their own I think I overdid it. I am so in love with figs that I was wondering if I could plant a fig tree on the land, we have almond trees and brought back lots of nuts but the entire (very large) box was emptied by rodents in our garage! We found mounds of empty kernels under all our shelving units.

Fig trees don't seem to need a lot of attention. Ours was here when we bought the house . Occasionally I prune it but mainly 'cos it grows too much not to increase yield. What a drag - losing your nuts. Animals and birds will snaffle anything . We lost almost our entire blueberry crop last year because small birds had found a way into the fruitcage.

All those sound yummy Jean and you deserve some comfort food. How are you feeling? I like dark chocolate and tiny individual tubs of ice cream. 😋 X

My afibs worse since stopping alcohol. Not that I was a big drinker anyway. But I dare not risk it. Have another for me Kenny.

It’s been a difficult adjustment giving up vodka martinis and wine. I drank them only with food. Meals are no longer as enjoyable for me, particularly Italian food without red wine. I have a nice collection of Brunellos but now can only pour them for others. Last night, I had a mere sip of a Beaujolais Nouveau and could immediately feel its effect on my heart. But I can enjoy 8 ounces of beer without effect. What is it about red wine?

Kennyb1968 profile image
Kennyb1968 in reply to Tiburon

I'm exactly the same - red wine is deadly! As is port which to a military man, is heartbreaking 😭

Isn't it just - I was fine but I must have drunk 4 litres of water before bed and spent the entire night peeing 😂

Interesting reading the comments. I'm nearly 4 years post ablation and still haven't had another episode (touch wood). Alcohol increases my HR but doesn't seem to be a trigger. I do have bouts of flutter and ectopics but again, I can't quite pin it on alcohol. I drink more than I should though, as I definitely feel better without but that's an ongoing challenge. Enjoy whilst you can Kenny!

Good beer and great wine are, for me, too hard to give up completely at present! 😀🍺🍷 - however before my NSTEMI in April - and the persistent AF that followed - the units had been creeping up for a while… the booze never seemed to set off my previous Paroxysmal AF, but I now recognise it was probably working on progression of AF and CAD behind the scenes! Since my NSTEMI and especially since my ablation I’ve cut right back (for me) to 10-14 units/week spread out-arguably still too much (particularly on anticoagulant AND - for a year - anti platelet meds) but there you go, all part of the quality of life balance and risk assessment, up there with do I give up cycling where I might bash my head? Not completely is the answer for me just more selective and careful!
