UK setting expectations when you bang your head

Not a complaint, just setting peoples expectations....

Wife has just had a fall and banged her head. Whilst it looked like a lot of blood, the cut was relatively small. We went to the local minor injuries unit but as shes on anti coagulants they say any head injury requires a CT scan so we had to go to A&E which was very over crowded.

Sometimes you just can't avoid A&E.

I had a similar situation three weeks ago. I walked into my open estate boot lid gashing my head open with about an inch cut. It bled quite a lot (but a little blood does seem to go a long way!). A&E it was, and they also gave me a scan to check for any internal bleeding as I am on Edoxaban. Nothing wrong and by the time they came to checking my head the bleeding had stopped and I was discharged with any stitches or anything.

Thankfully my visit to A&E was when they were pretty quiet. I only waited 20 mins for the scan and but then another 2 1/2 hours to see the doctor (who TBH didn't know I'd had a scan until I asked him about it).

Best to be safe than sorry.

Not so lucky for us as we got to A&E at 8pm on the Saturday of the bank holiday weekend. About an hour for triage, another 1.5 hours to CT scan , then finally saw doc to clean wound and do the stitches at 2am. Then another wait for an hour for a taxi to take us back to our holiday flat. ...Still better safe than sorry.

It is good advice to seek medical advice if you receive a blow to the head. How is your wife today? I hope she is recovering well?

Thanks. A few days on now and the bruising is coming out like she's done 10 rounds with Mike Tyson. We have been provided a list of things to look for in case the initial CT scan missed a bleed but so far so good.

I fell over and crashed my head and face. I knew from EP that I had to phone for an ambulance and although I said I’m sure it’s just my face and rest of my body, because of apixaban they insisted I go to hospital. The necessary CT scan found a brain bleed (subarachnoid brain haemorrhage) so the reversal drug for apixaban was given snd were going to send me to St. George’s to be cauterised but as I had had previous brain tumour surgery it was too risky to go in again, so hopefully it has cleared up on its own by now If you are on any anticoagulants it is important that a CT scan is carried out

Hope all well for your wife now

Best wishes

Pat

Thanks Pat. She still has concerns so we've managed to get an appointment with the nurse at our GP surgery to remove the dressing and check it's heeling OK.
