Cracked the top of my head on the corner of a chest of drawers last night. No loss of consciouness, didnt see stars, but head is still tender to touch. No lump.Should I bother to go to A and E? My aunty had a bang to the head last year and ended up with a slow bleed which had to be drained.....

I am on apixaban

Just wondered what thoughts people have

Make sure those around you are aware and can react if you start doing strange things. If you feel nauseous or dizzy then call a medic. Hard one to decide but err on caution. Only you know really.

111 will always err on the side of caution.

Make sure you pack a good book

Argh I feel for you wilsond- it’s such a worrying dilemma, isn’t it?

When I did exactly the same kind of knock to my head, I rang my GP surgery straight away to ask (I'm also on Apixaban). And he said categorically no need to go to a&e unless it was the kind of injury I’d think I should get checked out even if not on an anticoagulant. And the difference is then that I should go straight away, and they must CT scan as a priority. He said things like a ‘powerful blow to the head’ like a boxer might give you, hitting your head hard in a fall, or anything where you see stars or lose consciousness even momentarily are the ones to go to a&e for.

To be honest I wasn’t overly convinced, as my head was tender for days in the spot I knocked it, and throbbed badly for a day or so. So after a while I spoke to another dr - who said the same! And thankfully I was ok, both times this has happened. :)

If I were you I think I’d ring your GP to get advice? Good luck and please do let us know Xx

in reply toJaneFinn

That was exactly the advice I got from my doctor when I was on Xarelto.

Cannot add anything more constructive but A&E will understand why you are there and will treat you accordingly.......

Ah sorry to hear your in the wars again, I'd get checked if on Apixaban or anything similar just as a precaution, doesn't hurt to be safe.

Ian.

Probably be a good idea to get checked out

I think it’s probably better to get checked as doing nothing may cause you to worry about not ‘doing the right thing’. A telephone call may not be a satisfactory diagnostic and you will be advised to seek help.

Best wishes with it - I banged my head when I fell and dithered about A&E, didn’t go, was OK but worried for 3 days!!

Thank you Finvola. I rang GP in the end and he said he would rather me get checked out, interestingly he said ' especially with the Noacs' I shall ask him what he meant on Friday at a routine appointment for something else. I had a CT scan ..and an ecg(?) All was well. But to keep an eye on it in case ..have a leaflet to read. Have a trip booked on Sunday to Lincoln Christmas market so want to be well by then !! Take care of yourself too xxx

Good news wd - so glad that all is OK. Interesting comment about NOAC’s and I would be interested in any info you get from your GP.

Enjoy the Christmas Market - brings back great old memories of Gluwein in my days before AF.

I think you did the right thing thing. Sorry only just catching up on threads. My Dad was on Warfarin. He had a fall and hit his head. Blood everywhere! The paramedics took him to hospital and scanned him and he had a slight bleed and his sight was affected.

I was told any hard bang to the head, not to take chances, but to see a medic. Hope all will be OK. Best wishes

If on an anticoagulant and you suffer blow to head however slight you must go to A&E for scan. A neighbour who failed to do this died recently.

Something similar happened to my wife who takes apixaban. We went to A&E to get it checked out. She had scans and, much to our relief, there was no problem. Much better to do that than take the risk of a bleed. As BobD said, best to err on the side of caution.

When I fell outside and banged my head in the temporal region against a wall I went across to my doctors and was sent to A&E where I was monitored for a few hours and had a head scan Thankfully I was fine I am on Rivaroxaban

While on Warfarin, I raised my head under a wall cabinet in the garage. I told my wife, "Boy, that was a hard bump". No bump on my head like I would get as a kid, no sore spot, no headache. Three weeks later, I had a minor headache for a few days so I went to urgent care on vacation in Sedona-they helicoptered me to the regional hospital in Flagstaff where they drilled 2 holes in my skull and kept me there a few days. They asked if I had been in a car wreck-no, just a minor head bump. About 2 weeks later, more minor headaches so checked into the regional hospital in Medford, OR where they drilled 2 more holes. The big problem came when, after stopping the warfarin, I got blood clots which made their way to my lungs. Recovery from that was much longer than the head drills. I did put a layer of foam rubber on the bottom of all my garage cabinets. I wish you the best of luck.
