Hi,

has anyone any idea what I can use to treat fungal toenail nail? Says definitely not the standard tablet route with AF and our meds.

any advice please?I'd go to our chemist but there have been problemswith staffing, suddenly a sign goes up randomly to say closed due to no pharmacist present and the phone....well let's not go there!

Is that Boots Wilsond? Our local one is diabolical. Notices up every five minutes,no pharamcist. There may be bigger Boots issue.

No its Lloyd's. What is going on ?!

Lloyds is even worse! The whole staff walked out of our local branch which was then closed for 2 weeks and when it reopened it was chaos! Our GP told us to avoid so we now drive another 5 miles to a recommended Independant Pharmacy - who are brilliant!

A lot of positions were filled by east European workers, including many dentists so I think that’s why we have a labour shortage! Something the government is playing down. The Lake District hotels are really suffering. Good Old Brexit! How the masses were conned!

UK Immigration Law? UK Government anti EU worker sentiment, unless they are rich of course? Other EU countries are paying more for the same jobs due to the decline in our economy due to Brexit?

This is not a political forum, but in reply to your remark ...the UK government is not anti EU they implemented a democratic decision, whether you agree or not. When Germany stop paying Russia a billion euros a day to finance the Russian war effort come back with something useful to say.

Well try telling that to establishments in the Lake District! Everywhere you look there are staff wanted notices. A friend who had a very thriving hotel is only able to open to residents… although much of her business previously was passing tourists. She’s just recently started to employ a few Ukrainians who have moved here recently. One care home in Kendal announced on the local news that they are now full staffed again… nearly 40% of new staff coming from south India… to replace the Eastern Europeans who left after Brexit!

Happening here in the USA too Jean. The minimum wage has been raised by the government to $15 an hour and many mom and pop businesses just can't afford to pay that and pay their overhead too. People are leaving the restaurants and finding other work less stressful. Many people still working from home as that's cheaper for the businesses who are still doing that. Rent is so high in many areas people are moving to other areas to find someplace to live. More and more people are becoming homeless because they can't afford the rent. They are being evicted. These aren't bums. These are hardworking people. Many husbands and wives both work. Many work more than one job and still can't afford rent. For example a house that rented for $1000 a month is up to double or triple that in many areas around the country. Utilities are double and triple. Home insurance and car insurance has gone up significantly. Many people have had to drop their home insurance because it has gone sky high. Several home and property insurance companies here in Florida have closed or moved to other states. We are suffering from the highest inflation in the USA in 40 years. And before long if things don't change soon we will be in for another depression. I would assume you in the UK and other countries have to be suffering from the same. We have a great restaurant not far from where I live. It's an old sugar mill that is in a park. Been in business for over 60 years. They are closing because they can't afford to pay the increase in utilities and other overhead. There have been many mom and pop businesses close. Chain restaurants and stores do better but still have risen their prices. I see people in the grocery store look at the meat counter and walk away because they can't afford to pay the high prices. Including myself. I tend to look for the meat that has been marked down. Even canned pet food is double in price. So now my cats only get wet food once a day. Dry the rest of the day. 😿Like a friend of mine would say--The world is upside down. 😕😞

I’ve been a multi disciplined Complementary Therapist for 25 years, possible but a very learned friend of mine who uses oils regularly warned me to be careful, it is a very powerful oil and as they say ‘less is more’. I have felt burning on occasions from it neat. I use the book ‘The Fragrant Pharmacy’ brilliant and very knowledgable lady.

It's an all round treatment in our house. 😊 I get a bit hot under the breast area but don't use tea tree there because it's a wet treatment. Men are lucky they aren't shaped like us! Last time I had a rash I took a chance and bought prickly heat powder with menthol. It worked a treat. I thought if it works in clammy countries it will in the UK. We seem to do "humid" well!😁

Auriculaire profile image
Auriculaire in reply to Windlepoons

I have the same problem but found abandoning my bra when at home in hot weather helps. I used to get awful chafing with underwired bras. Going braless has also helped enormously with breast pain that I used to suffer from a lot. Apparently you get better lymph drainage. The heat here in the Limousin is not the dry heat of Provence and the Med. It can be extremely humid.

I wear mainly cotton clothes. I am allergic to wool -it has made me itch since being a small child. I do sweat a lot especially when working in the garden in summer. My husband used a fungal toenail paint with the active ingredient Amorolfine (I think it was 5%?) in it- it comes in various brand names. The GP recommended it in order to avoid taking the tablets, and it’s worked for him… (Not sure about any contraindications - I’ve googled but can’t find anything helpful, sorry.)

Same here with our pharmacy! What is up with them? And last week I received my meds from them in a box with a good expiry date on it, but once home, the tablets inside the box had an expiry date of July 22!! Shocking…

Good luck with the toe xx

But do stay away from tablets, many issues possible.

Anyone have a recommendation for trimming a fungal toenail ? Mine is quite brittle and normal clippers do not work. Podiatrist did trim but he since retired and others recommend only filing which is quite cumbersome.

I'm a foot health practitioner.😊. Tablets are the best way if its a particularly bad issue with a few nails affected. However, they are contraindicated with a few health conditions as the active ingredient, terbinafine can cause liver problems, so doctors will be reluctant to prescribe it.The reason tablets are better is because the fungus is actually in the nail bed beneath the nail so it's difficult to treat topically.

However, some of my patients have had good results with the Scholl Fungal Nail Treatment. You must use it religiously for effective treatment but it will still take a few months to improve. Or, you could find a practitioner who does the Lacuna Method treatment, which involves drilling little holes in the nail so the topical treatment can get through to the nail bed. It's not as gruesome as it sounds.😁.

Lamisil is also an option. This has terbinafine as the active ingredient, not as potent as the tablets so I would still suggest you discuss that one with your pharmacist.

You can cock your foot up on the table for a free consult when we meet for frothy coffee 😁........ trying to free space in the diary for that.x

Yep, I've had some success with the Scholl treatment, and it does take a long, long time to work. I found the treatment pack fell short on the abrasive and things, but the treatment oil went on and on, so I used regular emery boards. Got there in the end, after about twice as long as they said.

Yes, it dies take a long time and folks usually get impatient and stop using it as regularly, which then takes it longer to go.I just tell people to get a big pack of Emery boards from the poundshop and cut them in half to make them stretch and throw them away after single use.😊.

Hi

A friend had a really bad case but his toenail was saved.

Prevention always cut a V in the nail at the top to stop the toenail ingrowing.

Soak feet/foot in salt water.

Dry properly.

Put antifungus cream on sparingly. I PREFER DAKTARAN not a partially funded ointment. Look for a good date forward to use again as you get another infection.

I have "athletes foot" now. But with 1 week twice a dsay and 1 week wash, dry thoroughly and reapply.

In total 2 weeks. Mine started itchy and sore.

Only one foot! I dont need to treat the other.

Are you flip flopping about?

Maybe beach or shower and not drying between toes carefully.

Best of Luck.

It is very cntagious. I got it off my husband's feet.

Washing in sensitive washing powder. Standing on a guest towel when you step into the shower.

Change socks and guest towel daily. Socks in hot water and cotton is the best. Sweat can also cause it.

Are you taking antibiotics? Include mushrooms in your daily diet.

Hi, I have never dealt with that issue, but it just so happens that in July I had to get this for my mom who had a potentially life threatening skin infection from a spider bite! As I read the reviews before making the purchase I saw multiple customers saying that it worked wonders for toenail fungus. This is on Amazon, we are in America, but I can't imagine why you couldn't find it 🙂 good luck and please read the reviews. Also, it helped my mom's wound heal a lot faster than without it. She had two antibiotics and this spray.

MishaKitty profile image
MishaKitty in reply to CDreamer

This help heals wounds faster, fights some complicated bacteria that can slow down healing and gets rid of fungus. I wouldn't have mentioned it if I was unsure and didn't have some experience with it. As I also said there are multiple reviews on it working very well on stubborn fungal infections.

It says it right on the label even lol. It's not a simple sanitizer. Nooo.

This article discusses some options:

webmd.com/skin-problems-and...

Unfortunately, the 3 month course of tablets (which require a liver/kidney test) are by far the most effective option-other treatments just may not work. I would check with your GP to see whether your particular heart medications rule them out.

We've tried several paint on lacquer type products, all proved to be utterly useless and a waste of money (some rather pricey). My GP assures me that the only treatment that works is the oral tablets. We've given up bothering, though, as the tablets caused our son's taste to alter for some months and the fungus returned anyway.

Propolis liquid. It’s what the bees make to keep fungi controlled in the hive. It smells strong but you can dilute it.

Bellaowl profile image
Bellaowl in reply to Cookie24

I use about 3 drops in 300mls water for my mouth. I imagine for a foot would need more water. But phone beevital a d ask. They are in Yorkshire. Or email them. There product is quite concentrated so a little goes a long way.

Other propolis I’v bought appears to be very diluted already.

I use it on insects bites and cuts from the garden also, usually undiluted and they heal very quickly.

Lavender essential oil is also very good antiseptic and burn treatment. But always buy good quality, first press oil. High altitude lavender oil is also good.

Hope that helps. Bella

Bellaowl profile image
Bellaowl in reply to Cookie24

Sorry didn’t say how often. If it’s Candida in the mouth I mouthwash usually twice a day. When it necrosed about every hr. for insect bites or cuts from the garden about twice/ day after cleaning the wound.

I’ve not had fungal nail disease even though I’m diabetic, so fortunate. But I would soak with the foot in a bowl, soften the nail to cut off excess then either soak in the diluted propolis or use it direct in, over and under.

Hopefully the people at beevital can give you advice or put u in touch with a therapist using it.

My very nice chiropodist had now retired otherwise I would ask him.

I have multiple allergy syndrome so can’t take many meds so I have to find alternatives.

Does that answer the query.

I had a fungal infection on my big toe nail for over a year, tried lots of recommended over the counter products, nothing worked. Given tablets by GP but after reading the guidelines, did not use them, I have afib and on a lot of meds. Decided to leave my nail alone and it was coming into summer so put nail polish on my toe nails including top coat etc. When I removed the polish about 6 weeks later, the fungal part had reduced, so continued doing this for about 6 months, and it cleared up. Worth a try, but don't share the nail polish with anyone.

Use Excilor Extra. My chiropodist tells me its the only thing that works, it did for me.You paint it on the nail daily, rub the previous coat off before you apply, preferably after a bath or shower as it comes off more easily.

You will need to be persistent as you need to continue the treatment until the infected area of the nail has completely grown out. You can buy it online if chemists are not open local to you

belindalore profile image

I agree with the tea tree oil treatment. You can dilute it. One to two drops tea tree mixed with a carrier oil like coconut, olive or almond oil. Another is 20-25 drops tea tree oil mixed with 1/4 cup water and 1/2 cup distilled white vinegar. This can be put in a small spray bottle. I think I'd put it in a bottle with a lid and maybe brush it on the nails or dab it on with a cotton ball or something. Another remedy that helps some people is apple cider vinegar. The kind that has the "mother in it". Raw unfiltered organic apple cider vinegar. We have Braggs brand here in the USA. And lastly Vicks vapor rub works for some people. The main thing is patience. 😌 Natural remedies can take a long time to work. But worth it as they are not hard on the body when taking other meds. I have a chronic problem with yeast overgrowth (fungal infections) anywhere in my body living in this humid climate in Florida. I used to take Diflucan. But it's hard on the liver plus now it causes my palpitations to be worse. So I go for the natural route. Good luck and take care.

belindalore profile image

I haven't personally used it. A friend of mine did. Remember the natural treatments take awhile and may or may not work for everyone. But vinegar certainly won't hurt you and it also helps get rid of calluses too. You'll want to use 1 part vinegar to two parts water and make enough for a foot soak. Soak feet couple times a day. I would imagine you could dab the diluted vinegar using a cotton ball right on the nails. So it may take several weeks to work. Good luck finding what works for you.

Just to add for those mentioning Vicks. It depends on what type of fungus you have as to whether it will respond to Vicks. The most common culprit is a dermatophyte called Trichophyton Rubrum and this is not helped by Vicks.

Some fungus is yeast based and a small amount have other causes so one size does not fit all.

Some preparations just bleach the nail so you think that it's gone but it's not.

Whatever treatment you use will take months. There is no quick fix for this.😊.
