Drug interaction

To my huge disappointment I had to go straight to A and E yesterday. I had been to my GP feeling odd,I had had cystitis for 3 days . She was very thorough and did urine , Bp and pulse check. After prescribing an antibiotic , She sent me straight to A and E . There I was prioritised, fantastic service! I had a virulent urine infection and this had set off my A F big time.

After 3 years of not visiting A and E / cardiology I was SO upset, mainly because you have to report any such visit to your travel health insurance.

I had every check possible in A and E, 3 ecgs! Incredibly kind and concerned and SO overworked.

I thought they would keep me in but I was let out at 8 pm.

They dismissed the anti biotic the GP had prescribed as not being suitable for any one over 60.

I have been prescribed Doxicyclin for 5 days , having double checked , as I now always do, I read that Doxicyclin interacts badly with Digoxin.

Do I take it or not?

My daughter says I must trust A and E .

Any advice?

Sorry you are having a tough time. Check it out before taking it. First of all can you call your usual pharmacy they are pretty good at understanding drug interactions. I would also check with the GP again. Not sure I would just take a and e word for it without checking it out unless it was a cardiologist there who prescribed it. Hope you get sorted quickly and things are resolved.

I think it was a cardiologist Meadfoot. He was very thorough . Felt safe in hospital , different being home alone.Any way the sun is out!

This is the NICE drug interaction list for Doxycline.

Thanks Oyster but I could get no real info from that site.

Digoxin is not on the list, which provides some reassurance, but your GP/pharmacist are the best source of information.

Which site did you use? Because there is a very alarmist American one which I would avoid! I was prescribed an antibiotic recently and as soon as my GP put it on the screen a warning came up that it was not suitable with Diltiazem so he changed to Doxycycline.

That is reassuring , thanks Buffafly. I feel really wobbly today , probably all in the head.

How are you now? You have had your problems.

I am much better thank goodness. I hope you feel better soon. I looked up a couple of reputable websites myself and was a bit horrified to see all the other reactions with digoxin listed. I'm very relieved my hospital doctor changed her mind about giving it to me, also dropped the Bisoprolol idea. It's a minefield once you start needing several medications isn't it? I know sometimes doctors have to balance the possibility of interactions against benefit if you develop a serious new condition. Makes me even more determined to try to stay healthy.

Best wishes 💕

Hum, yes Buffafly these sites can be so alarming.

There is also some connection between Digoxin and diabetes mellitus . But , I would rather take Digoxin than any beta blocker. We are all so different.

I was recently on Doxycycline for a week for Bronchitis and I’m on 187.5 mcg of Digoxin. I was fine. My GP who prescribed it has been with me all the way with my heart journey so was well aware of me being on Digoxin.

Thanks Kaz , that is so reassuring. I am taking it, hope it kicks in soon. Frightening how an infection somewhere in the body triggers even persistent AF.
