Drug interaction

I am now totally confused. I have agonising back pain. A new, to me, GP has just told me it is fine to take Ibuprofen! I had already told her I was on Rivaraxaban, Dogoxin and Losartan. I looked it up on line and it says Ibuprofen is definitely a no no if on those heart drugs.

Any answers?

Just goes to show that you need to be one step ahead in this game ! Ibuprofen, as you say is contraindicated. Indeed it can cause arrhythmias.

I was warned to avoid all NSAID’s when I started Apixaban as drugs like Ibuprufen can increase the risk of bleeding. In addition, as Yatsura says, Ibuprufen and Diclofenac have been proven in trials to cause AF.

Well done you for checking.

If the pain is from soft tissue, ice and heat alternately for ten minutes every hour gives me relief. I got massive relief too from a chiropractor for a disc injury. My GP said that a small amount of anti-inflammatory gel is OK as so very little is absorbed.

Back pain is horrible - massive sympathy.

Thank you for reply, I must get some help. Due to go to France next week but, with all this pain I'm exhausted. I can stand and walk but not sit ,drive or lie down..

Could you get a supply of cocodamol from your GP...could help to get you moving which we are all told is necessary for back pain.....easier said than done !

Hi Lulu - sorry to hear of your back pain. You can get co-codamol from your GP (I take Solpadol more or less the same) it is 30mg codein and 500mg paracetamol. There is tramadol but that is a lot stronger and some people do not get on with it. Definite no to Ibuprofen it increases the heart rate. I have problems with my back and I visit a Osteopath on a regular basis. She normally gets my back sorted in one or two sessions and my wonky neck as well. Worth a try.

I was prescribed Amitriptyline for leg pain associated with my hip and lower back as I couldn't sleep. Fortunately the trapped nerve popped out (in?) while doing exercises recommended by my physiotherapist so I haven't had to take one yet 😀 I was told to try the hot/cold treatment. I also found a set of exercises on the internet which were effective before I saw the physio. I don't know what kind of back pain it is but if you look up Arthritis Research or NHS Choices you might find something useful, best wishes.

Thanks to buffafly, Cassie, finola and all of your replies.

Last year I went to 4 different physios , they all told me completely different things . It was an expensive waste of time.

This time the low back pain is much worse.

After begging and begging for a refferal I actually got to have an X-ray today.

Now I have to wait for the specialist report. . It really is a vile pain, makes me feel sick.

I am so glad I checked about bad interaction between Ibuprofen and

Ribaraxaban, I am getting a bit obsessive about this sort of thing. Basically one should able to trust not doubt the professionals.

I will stick with mainly ineffectual Paracetemol because I do not get on at all with amiltriptyline or tramadol, I can't spend the rest of my life half doped.

Meanwhile the rampant soggy garden is invading the house.

Take the time to look at this video.

You really need to to go to a competent chiropractor and right away. Other help that you have had is not the specialty that you need. Please don't take more drugs. The drugs will mask the problem until the body fixes it but sometimes the body needs expert outside help. All drugs have negative side effects.

Ugh, I pleaded for an X-ray at my GP yesterday. I was pretty sure it was not muscle pain but bone pain. I was told an X-ray would be pointless but I got firm. Had X-ray this morning , I was in so much pain I was weeping. I have had valve repair but, quite tough experience but, the pain I am in now is !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Had X-ray, X-rayist asked if I had been referred to the pain management clinic . Of course not.

They sent results direct to GP , I was summonsed to surgery there and then!

A large amount of low spine degeneration since 8 months ago..

Put on Amyltriptiline, looked at notes which said not good for people with AF ..

Birthday trip to son in France, end April , looks impossible.sob.

This is truly awful for you. I'm glad you stood firm and insisted on X-ray. I do hope something can be done for your pain now.

Regards

Sandra

You have all my sympathy, I also have degenerative arthritis in the spine but my physio is ignoring the spine problem and concentrating on my hip. I wanted an X ray but after reading up about it I suspect that in my case there is nothing to be done as most of my spine is pinned already! If I continue to have episodes of pain I might arrange to see my original surgeon in case there is something he feels might be useful.

I am interested to hear how you get on. Regarding amitriptyline etc I have realised there has to be balance, you have to treat the worst symptom and cope with the consequences somehow. Such severe pain upsets my heart anyway.

My cardiologist says stay away from all nsaids( non steroidal anti inflammatory) drugs as they are harmful to the heart. But being on anticoagulant, they usually say no as they can also affect the blood clotting. I can only take tylenol.

Lulu - I have degeneration of the spine (from old injury back in my twenties) which some times flares up really badly, I have the same symptoms can walk and stand but sitting, laying down and driving is a night mare. So far my osteopath had been able to sort this with a couple of visits, it really is worth a try. As I have degeneration of my right hip and neck I see her on a regular basis now to keep my wonky joints mobile lol! I too cannot take Amyltriptiline or Tramadol, gives me brain fog! I am not a fan of chiropractors, I had a serious shoulder problem 10 years ago, spent 5 months going to one of the countries top chiropractors and a lot of money, she achieved some relief but no cure. Went to an osteopath in desperation, three months later with a lot of hard work from her she solved the problem and it has never recurred. Wish you better.

Cassie

PS - did you GP not give you any co-cocodamol or solpadol (I take Solpadol as it seems easier on my stomach - it is on my repeat prescription).

Hi, I have sever back and neck pain and now in need of a new knee so have pain there as well. All this stops me from moving too much which always helps with pain. My Cardio did say that I could take the occassional dose of ibuprofen or co-dydramol just to ease things so that I could either get moving or sleep. By that I think he meant one dose a week from what it said in his letter to my GP. To be honest I don't think that would touch the pain. Have you tried a TENS unit. I find that very good if I use it about an hour before going to bed. Gives me some respite from the pain. A heat pad can also help. As can alternating hot and cold compresses. Sympathise with you.
