Blood thinners

I was diagnosed in Feb with AF and asked a GP if I should avoid leafy veg with vitamin K. He referred me to Cardiology but I have been put on a waiting list to see/speak to one but the list is 30 to 35 months long! Does anyone know, I am taking Lixiana edoxaban? Many thanks in advance.

Edoxaban is not a vit K antagonist like warfarin is so there are no dietary restrictions with this anticoagulant. It works on a different part of the clotting process.

Like Bob said, eat green to your heart's content, no pun intended :)

See above article.

Many health benefits of leafy, green vegetables. A balanced diet should do no harm.

We seniors have other challenges to prevent besides AFib. :)

I am old, 76. I started on Warfarin 1974. Still on it without any problems. I was diagnosed with AF. still got it. The best thing to do is not to worry about your health. I dont. I eat what I want, but I dont eat much. I usually have some chicken and rice or some pasta. I keep my weight in check.

Have you had AFIB since 1974.? Brudie.

Even with Warfarin there is no need to avoid greens, red wine etc but you need to maintain a consistent level in your diet such that the warfarin dosage is balanced accordingly. I've been on warfarin for 22 years without problem..

The fact that your GP did not know the answer is pretty shocking. Is he old or very new or just incompetent? It really highlights that we have to be responsible for our own health.

I like the article mentioned by Mav7 above.

I had the same worries with Apixaban and studiously shunned all my favourite kales, cabbages and Asian greens..... all for no reason at all! This year I have made up for it and my skin has turned green with the chlorophyll (that's a joke, in case anybody takes me literally!)

HiOther person to ask is your senior chemist.

I have a double whammy. I shouldn't eat greens because of thyroxin - the synthetic thyroid replacement meds after a thyroidectomy for cancer. Also have AF and taking PRADAXA. Which says just keep eating soy, greens, seaweed etc moderately.

Definately you have to for Warfarin and that one is blood tested regularly.

cheers JOY. 73. (NZ)
