Just took my ROSPA advanced driving test this morning and passed with Gold Standard. One for the oldies eh! Ban driving after 70? Bah humbug. ( Had a great instructor who if anythng is happier than I am. Thank you Alan Powell.)

A friend was still driving quite safely in his mid 90's.He poodled around our quite big City and gave up driving just before his 96th birthday. So BobD you have quite a way to go!

Congratulations Bob! Well done!My father in law is still driving at 90….

I’m. Not sure what this test is.. but quite sure I couldn’t do it. With my heart condition and the way symptoms strike, I’m hesitant to drive far these days.

Well done 👍 I’ve always wanted to do the advanced course but never got round to it and if I remember rightly isn’t it quite pricey ?

BobD profile image
BobDVolunteer in reply to bantam12

£60 for each two hour lesson and about £70 for the test .

I’ve just checked a few places and seen £300 + for 3.5 hours tuition, not even sure how available it is round here as I’m in a rural area. Maybe I’ll treat myself one day !

Well done!

Are they really proposing to ban driving over 70? Do they require periodic road tests or did you just take yours voluntarily? Here, in the US, only eye tests are required in most states to renew licenses. No road tests. Which no doubt leaves people on the road who shouldn't be.

So an off topic question on an off topic. You sound like someone with good road skills. How do those skills translate when you have to drive on the right side of the road when not in the UK? I have always driven on the right side of the road and not so sure at this point I would feel safe driving on the left side.

There is always somebody shouting about how old people shouldn't be allowed on the road and right now they are vocal again Jim . After 70 we have to renew our licences every three years. Seven years ago when I got to 70 I chose to give up my "truck" license as it would have meant taking a medical exam at my expense and since I have no interest in driving such large vehicles these days I let it lapse. There is currently no legal obligation to re take a test . For some years I have had an afternoon every so often when I went out with a ROSPA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents) instructor to keep up my skills and ensure I wasn't getting sloppy. It was he who encouraged me to take the exam as he told me I could get top marks. I did my first advance driving course with a police driving instructor on 1977 when he drove a race car I prepared and part of the deal was he got to teach me advanced driving so I have always tried to be the best.

Re driving on the "wrong" side I've done it a fair bit in Europe when we've been racing there (Monza, Spa etc) so not an issue. Easier in a left hand drive hire car than an English one where you can't see round traffic ahead. You adapt quite quickly Jim. Roundabouts are the worst as you are looking the wrong way. lol 😁

Driving abroad I found left turns the worst, going into the nearest "wrong lane. Nearly went into a police car in Crete. Would have been locked up for life . 😂

When driving in Germany years ago ( I learnt to drive there though only there 2 years) had right hand drive car for my UK return. Came across a road block and police held up hand to stop me. My passenger said " oh no" and put her head in her hands and police scattered!!!

Hi

Yes my Mum was banned from driving after she indicated and went around the roundabout the WRONG WAY.

Over 75 but not sure of her age then.

With Stroke one is banned from driving for 6 weeks. With Dr's OK I thought I could drive from then but no Dr asked for a physical Test and so waited another 8 weeks for an appointment.

Well done BobD. A great accomplishment. It's good to hear that there is another life other than AF - you just have to go for it. You are a great inspiration to us all. Up the oldies. Never say never. God bless to you.

Buy a copy of Road Craft, study it carefully and learn how traffic police drive and copy that basically but a good instructor helps . I've been having regular outings with him since I arranged for my wife to do the course when she bought her road rocket in 2016 but never wanted to do the test in case I scored higher then she did. Only because she doesn't want to re-take the test (usually every three years) as she doesn't drive so much these days did she encourage me to try. I did by the way but her car is still faster than mine. lol 😁.

We all need to be highly critical of oursleves and strive for perfection all the time.

I have dreams like that too, last night I conquered Everest 😉😂😉. Well done!!

Well done BobD How's your AF these days? I remember we got them pretty much the same time Aug 2019

BobD profile image

Going PM route soon but AF is fine, just HR too fast (85=-90) and if I slow it down with drugs I get presyncope hence the PM.

Well done Bob.

This afternoon my car skidded on some grease/oil on the road when pulling up at traffic lights. I'll never know how I didn't go into the car in front of me. There must have been a mm between the cars. I hate driving and the car sliding today made me realise how dangerous it is. First time in my life that has happened.

Well done Bob. I joined a ROSPA group some years ago but they were so disorganized I gave up. Don't know if you live anywhere near London but the Met Police do an excellent one day course which I've done twice. Sadly I had to give up riding my motorcycle after chemo as I lost feeling in my feet and hands. Things are better now so I might get back on the bike one day if I can get it away from my son!

Well done and good for you. I did a couple of police driving courses a few years ago - just loved it. Also did the Advanced Driving course but didn’t take the test because in those days you had to use your own car, for some reason I forget, and then husband changed it to an automatic before my test date. I just love driving and so wish I could have afforded to take up rally driving when I was younger. I just dread having to give up my licence. Anyway, congrats. Tricia

Well done Bob! 👏👏👏. My late father in law drive until the end, aged 90. Never had an an accident but witnessed hundreds in his wake 🤣.

BobD profile image
BobDVolunteer in reply to Ducky2003

My father had to give up at 92 after he launched his car (automatic) across the road into the bay window of the house opposite. Fire brigade had to cut him out and police said he should surrender his license or they would prosecute. If I'd had my way it would have been ten years earlier as he was dreadful! Shame after 70+ years of accident free driving but he had lost all sense of anticipation and everything was reactive rather than proactive.

Assume eveybody else on the road wants to kill you is my ethos.

Ducky2003 profile image
Ducky2003 in reply to BobD

Something similar happened to my friend. She was out shopping and got a call from her next door neighbour.

The older chap across the road had shot off his driveway and took out her bay as well (hit accelerator instead of brake).

Had to have the front of her house re-built and part of the internal wall as well as her lounge door,12ft from the front, wouldn't close due to the knock on effect.

I only accepted a lift from my father in law on one occasion. His car did more porpoising down the road than Hamilton's Merc. 😁.

Hi

After a stroke at 70 yrs due vto thyroid cancer undiagnosed and AF presenting I had to wait for a driving test in NZ Kaitaia.

I was awarded 10/10.

No written test only physical test.

It began to rain he took through the roundabout twice an 4 times over, through, turn left and right into a CROSSROADS x 4 situation.

70yrs I love driving.

Took a fellowcamper vanner around Tutukaka Coast, then to Purerua Peninsula (out from KeriKeri 25kms) to fism! 3 snapper and the trevally got offnight before.

Just drove my camper from Coopers Beach where I live to Kerikeri, the followind day out to Mitimiti past Kohukohu where the car ferry goes from and o/n stay at th beach Mitimiti on West Coast.

Back for 10 days then away

To Kerikeri, Paihia and car ferry to RUSSELL.

Never been to top end off OLD RIUSSELL RD. So explored the turn off to RAWHITI and the bays there. Queens Birthday weekend.

Arrived back on Tuesday when the rain emptied itself 'on the PLAIN"

You won't stop me from my love of exploring NZ.
