Stopping flec

Had an ablation in Jan. 3 month follow up doc says to stop the flec. I decided to wean myself off doing 50 mg am and 50 mg pm

I really feel different I seem a little bit jittery and feel as though my heart is beating faster but it really isn’t. Is this all normal? How long should I wean myself off ?

Any one else done this Amy advice would be great thank you

In reality you should only wean yourself off Flecainide if you are following medical advice from your EP.

Hope you stay stable.

Your heart has become used to being restrained by Flec. I liken it to a dog being let off its lead. It will go mad for a while, but then calm down..

I've come off Flec three times. The first two I just stopped suddenly, I had a few runs of low AF but then my heart found it's level. I lasted 6- 8 months completely AF free each time, but as winter drew near the AF would return.

The third and last time I decided to wean myself off I decided that gradually had to be the best way. Well my heart took great exception and frightened me so much that I immediately went back on my full dose and I haven't tried again since.

My EP advised me to do my best to reduce my dose from 2 x 100mg, even if it meant increasing my beta blocker Metoprolol a bit more. I'm stuck now on 2 x 75mg Flec.

I wish you good luck.

Jean

I haven't been in your situation but when I was told to stop Flecainide by a consultant because I was found to be in permanent though asymptomatic AF. I checked with a GP who has specialist knowledge of arrhythmias. He assured me that nothing adverse would happen if I stopped my 300mg a day, so I stopped, not weaned but stopped, and nothing happened. That was 6+ years ago.

Interesting replies with cold turkey being the consensus. I am taking 200mgs Flec and if I decide in the future to come off it I will be having a full and frank discussion with my cardio letting him know my preference (currently) is to wean myself off very very slowly ie over a 2 year period!

Had been on Flecainide for 10 years then had an AV Node Ablation and was told I would stop taking it after the procedure. I did. No problem.

Flecainide accumulates in your blood plasma over time so no need to ween yourself off it.
