PVCs - benign but ruddy hard work

I read often here that ectopic beats are benign and of no concern. Well, last week my hiatus hernia flared up and, swiftly following on, and as usual, so did my heart arrhythmias. So far no AF but oh my - “PVC”s galore. To me, these feel little different from AF - so very wearing and with the same chest discomfort, aching and levels of fatigue.

Thank goodness for the warm weather and my first G&T of the season is all I can say.

They are horrid critters and challenge us ongoing. Loath them. They have seen fit to infiltrate my life more and more. Often triggered by my hiatus hernia and other gastric ongoing issues. Could well do without them but they are here to stay I fear. Good luck with their management.

Thank you MF! We sound similar. I was beginning to wonder whether my arrhythmias begat the stomach issues or vice versa but, despite the esomeprazole, acid indigestion reared its head last week and sure as night follows day... the heart plays up.

I hope you have found respite thanks to the warmer weather in something liquid and convivial! If anyone tells me its bad for my heart, well, I don't care! ;-)

Not sure if this will be helpful but I am experiencing PVCs as I recover from mini maze surgery and the consultant said that this is often triggered by low potassium (obvs that has a gastric link) and to make sure I had enough bananas etc in my diet to keep potassium high.

Having read up on how much potassium rich food you need to eat to get your daily intake I am no where near enough! So diet changed a couple of days ago. Supplements are so low in potassium 3% of RDA that’s not an option,

Thanks for that ML. It’s a thought as I do take tablets for my stomach acid that can, I’ve read, sometimes affect electrolytes. I’ve just had a blood test for my rivaroxaban check and my GP always does a full test at the same time. I’ll ask him about this when I phone for the results.

I sometimes wonder whether an ablation doesn’t, in itself, lead to increased ectopic beats. I’ve always had them but since my ablation in 2019, they are much more frequent and troublesome .

I hope your ablation is continuing to do the trick and keep you well. It’s been really interesting to read your posts on it.

All is good thanks Steve, in NSR, last few days have had sinus Rythm with these PVCs on and off which as you say you can feel quite different from the afib fish flapping, more like a pop in the chest. I knew they and ectopics are common during the blanking period but hubby made me ask the surgeon and glad I did. Just had banana for breakfast 😂😂

Pleased to read you are in NSR which will bring so many health benefits! Hopefully the troublesome wee critters that are PVCs will go away!

Yes - all Apple Watches from Series 4 have the ECG app except one, the "SE" model, so that's to be avoided. They only work with an iPhone, though - so if you need one of those, too, it can be an expensive choice.

An equally good home ECG monitor that works with any modern mobile phone is from a Chinese company called Wellue and, of course, there are the popular two models from Kardia. I have the Wellue which is currently at a very good price for what it does, at around £80.00 from their website. It use automated AI to read the ECGs using the app and reports back a wide range of issues as well as AF.

The iPhone 6s will still work with any Watch from Series 4 with the ECG app, so you will be fine.
