Hiya everyone hope you are ticking along nicely just a niggle with me really. As some of you know from my previous posts I've gone from peroximal afib to permanent "apparently " the hospital won't put me back in nsr because I'm not on blood thinners as I'm low stroke risk but what if i reverted back myself?? Am i at risk of a stroke then??? I'm uneducated when it comes to blood pooling

Hi Rachel.

Don't come off your anticoagulants (blood thinners) even if you go back in to sinus without your doctors say so. You would still be at risk of a stroke. My call is to stick with them. Even if you self covert it can soon come back. You may not know - I would say stick with them unless a medic say's otherwise.

Enjoy your evening.

Paul

Edit - read your post again. You are in permanent afib but not on anticoagulants ? Hmmm - not a good idea IMO. Yes your stroke risk is there. You maybe lucky - you may not as well. Who gave you this advice ? If you decided this for yourself then that is your decision. If it came from your doctor I would find another pretty quickly !

Hiya Paul sorry for the delay in getting back. No I'm not on anticoagulants completely not my decision at all I was assessed on a stroke risk scale by my cardiology department scoring 2 highest being 10 the thing I don't understand is you can't be reverted back to normal sinus rythem in hospital without being on blood thinners pretty much been told that but what if you revert back on youself at home which could happen!! Whats the difference I'm still non the wiser

Hi Rachel.

They won't covert you without you taking an anticoagulant for 4 - 6 weeks. The reason is if a clot has formed it will dislodge it and you could well have a stroke. If are in permanent afib I really think you should take an anticoagulant (blood thinners).

Even if you go back in to sinus you are still at risk - I really would take a review of this from another cardio. My CHAD score is zero but I insisted on going back on them. I also have afib all the time. A stroke with afib will not be fun. Get a second opinion sweetheart - if you are in permanent afib my suggestion is to double check this one asap.

The last time I was in A&E with flutter the cardio did his 'rounds'. He said nah - you don't need anticoagulants. What a load of tosh. What you going to do then ? Leave me permanent afib for the the rest of my life and hope I don't have a stroke ? A stroke with afib is as bad it get's.

Please Rachel - get another medic's opinion on this one.

Thanks so much Paul for your advice what you say makes so much sense and mimics my thoughts exactly this is something I'm going have to take up with my cardiologist for sure

If you took any jabbs, I'd definitely stay on ant-coagulants the rest of my life. GL!

Ask if they will do a TEE before electro cardioverting you. You won't need thinners then to qualify, but they will probably ask you to take thinners after for at at least 3 week, perhaps permanently depending on your CHAD score. Yes, you can convert at home, many do, but you should be on thinners first.
