First Cardioversion today!

Hi everyone, Had my first Cardioversion this morning and just at home relaxing. I felt great immediately and especially knowing my heart has been returned to a normal rhythm from being in AF all the time . The team who took care of me and the 20 other patients was brilliant. How much rest would people who’ve had them advise before someone resumes running or physical activities? I’m a window cleaner and have given myself the day off tomorrow. But will be back in on Tuesday and hoping to be able to go running again next week. I know to not over do it. But right now feel brilliant. Got to the top of my stairs without being breathless too :D. Thanks everyone for your continued support and of this group.

I would think you would be ok. Listen to your body and don't push yourself.

I've had quite a few cardioversions, all were successful and it's a most wonderful feeling to wake after the anaesthetic and find your heart in normal rhythm - it's enough to make you cry!

Just a word of warning though I walked up a hill the day after one of mine and immediately went back into AF. So try not to exert yourself too much until your heart grows stronger beating in it's correct rhythm.

Thanks for your responses. I’m only 33 so aware this won’t be my last Cardioversion and after reading these forums and speaking to people yesterday. One guy had had 4 Cardioversion’s and 2 ablations all within the last 3 years AF doesn’t seem to go anywhere permanently. I just really want to keep myself fit and healthy. Obviously not overdoing it but with a healthy lifestyle and regular exercise as the things I love are all out doors and my job being up and down ladders I need too.

I do keep checking my pulse following yesterday thinking has it jumped out and it is brilliant to now see a constant pattern. Before it was absolutely insane how all over the show it was lol. My body doesn’t seem to be slightly rocking side to side after each beat now which is peaceful.

Good luck with your Cardioversion and I hope you don’t have to wait too long.

These forums have made me feel so much at ease since joining them following my diagnosis. Appreciate everyone’s comments.

Try to avoid food and drink with artificial additives in, caffeine, alcohol, sugar and keep yourself well hydrated.

I would suggest leave running for a week and try to have some more time off work. I left the week after mine for recovery and I am glad that I did.

Hi Wordzo, you have just gone through the same experience I went through in October, having had a month of AF, which was a miserable experience. I am 60 but do a lot of sport, but definitely took it slowly for a few weeks, building the effort. I have had a couple of experiences of flutter (not A fib) where the heart rate suddenly races to 170bpm, once due to a heavy drinking experience, once during covid and momentarilly when I was listening to Rod Stewart's latest appalling record on the radio! 🥴 Apart from that, I have focussed on staying well hydrated and drank alcohol in moderation, drink loads of tea and so far so good since mid Dec. Now back cycling and cross trainer sessions. I feel fine and although I realise it probably won't last forever, I'm enjoying being back to normal.
