I have been without an AF episode for 5 years then after a bout on pneumonia the AF returned and I went into A&E who advised me not to take my PIP of Flecainide as I had not had Echogram since 2013. I'm now on 10mg of Bisoprolol and 20mg of Rivaroxaban a day awaiting what they tell me I need is a cardio version. Anybody else experienced this with AF and will I return to normal rhythm without cardioversion as that stresses the hell out of me ?

AF after catching Pneumonia
Who knows as we are all different and AF is so random.
It is well known that chest problems can set off AF but I would have thought that things would have calmed down once the infection was over.
Cardioversion needs you to be anticogulated for some time (usually a month) in order to ensure that there are no clots lurking which could fly off and cause a stroke. It is quite possible to revert naturally although the drug regime you are on is not designed to do that. Cardioversion is done under very deep sedation and only takes a few minutes so is no big deal and many people here have had many.

Cheers Bob and thanks for the advise just a bit of a worrier as I have managed the AF for such a long time without an episode
You can have a Trans esophageal echo done just prior to ths CV and forgo the month of anticoagulants if reversion to NSR is deemed necessary clinically...You would be sedated and feel neither.
Quite right etheral and this happens in some cases . (I had this at six months after my first ablation and had unwisely stopped warfarin. after being told I could. ) Also if AF started for first time within 24 hours TOE and anticoagaulation not required but neither is appropriate in the case in question.

I think afib is one of those inflictions that seems to treat each sufferer differently so please don't be worried because my experience of flu & afib was not good. I had had several bouts of afib over two years. Each bout spontaneously reverted back to sinus rhythm in less than an hour. Then I caught flu and went into afib. It was the first time it didn't spontaneously revert back to normal. I had a number of cardioversions, the final one a high tech internal one. Each was successful but temporary, I kept going back into afib. The longest I had was two years. I am now in permanent afib.
6 weeks on still in AF and awaiting Cardio version. Being told the wait is weeks rather than months. Had my Echo scan and that was ok. Does anyone know any hospitals that I can pay private to get it done ? Nuffield Health and New Cross in Wolverhampton are only through NHS
